For over forty years, the Marion Area Counseling Center has been providing residents of Northwest Ohio with social services and treatment for substance abuse. Located in Marion, a small city 50 miles north of Columbus in North Central Ohio, MACC offers an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) as well as Foundations Recovery Center, a long-term residential treatment facility for men and women that was founded in 1973.
MACC has expanded operations in recent years to accommodate the need for treating victims of the region’s heroin epidemic, including implementing a Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) program. MACC currently provides mental health, case-management and substance abuse counseling services to over 3,500 residents each year.
Accommodations and Food
Foundations occupies a brick home in a quiet residential area. Accommodating up to 15 residents at a time, men and women reside on separate gender-specific floors. Residents have roommates and shared bathrooms and the home also has office space for the treatment staff as well as group therapy rooms and common areas for recreation. The home has a computer lab where residents can work on job skills and job-search activities with supervision. A medical technician is on-site for 24/7 support and supervision.
Foundations has a kitchen staff preparing all meals and residents in later phases of treatment may apprentice with the kitchen staff to improve their cooking skills for their own enjoyment or for vocational training. Throughout their stay, residents are assigned house chores to help them learn cooperation and life skills.
Treatment and Staff
The average stay at Foundations is four months, with some residents staying for as long as six months. Treatment aims to end addiction and improve life skills for independent living. Clients progress through phases of treatment that initially emphasize therapeutic interventions through group and individual therapy. They then move towards achieving education and employment goals and sober independent living.
Clients at Foundations have access to the Marion Area Counseling Center’s treatment team which includes Master’s-level therapists such as LPCs and LCSWs and addiction counselors including LCDCs. Foundations also provides extensive case-management services to connect clients with additional support services and help them coordinate their care. Clients with co-occurring disorders are provided with referrals to MACC’s mental health staff for medication and additional therapy, if needed.
Group and individual therapy uses evidence-based modalities such as CBT, DBT and Motivational Interviewing (MI). Foundations endorses the belief that peer support meetings and the 12-step framework are essential to long-term recovery and hosts several on-site 12-step meetings that clients are required to attend.

Foundations’ case-management services help clients create effective aftercare plans and explore post-treatment housing options, including MACC’s network of supervised transitional apartments.
