Always Hope is a detox and residential treatment facility in the Dominican Republic’s Puerta Plata. Founded by a Canadian man who wanted to give back after getting clean from an Oxycontin addiction, it offers individualized treatment based on the 12-step philosophy. Programming also implements evidence-based therapeutic approaches and relapse prevention techniques in a luxurious, tropical setting at an affordable cost.
Accommodations and Food
Always Hope’s residential campus is on several acres of secluded palm tree-lined grounds, just one mile away from the ocean. The resort-like accommodations are cabin-style private rooms with private bathrooms and the property can host up to eight residents at a time. The facility is divided by a private pool and includes patios with sun chairs and couches where clients can relax during down time. The shared areas include a large living room with couches, lounge chairs and a big screen TV. There is also Internet throughout the facility. The grounds also feature a private garden and lounge area with hammocks and a gym.
Every meal is prepared and provided by an on-site chef who uses local and organic ingredients native to the area, as well as hearty Northern American faire.
Treatment and Staff
Treatment is individualized to each client’s specific needs. As previously mentioned, there is on-site detox that typically lasts anywhere from three to seven days. Otherwise, the average length of stay in residential treatment is four weeks, though there is wiggle room to extend if needed. The programs are on a phase system and as the client progresses through treatment, he or she gains more freedoms to explore and enjoy the amenities.
These programs are designed to offer personalized and one-on-one care, so there is ample opportunity for clients to meet with their counselors daily for individual therapy. Treatment modalities include CBT, DBT, Motivational Interviewing (MI) and holistic treatment. Relapse prevention, anger management and life skills training are also facilitated. Additionally, a large focus is for clients to have fun without the crutch of drugs or alcohol. Treatment is aimed toward those with a primary diagnosis of substance use disorder and as such, dual diagnosis support is limited.
The small staff at Always Hope includes an LCSW and LPC, in addition to on-site residential support staff.
Extras
The programs include recreational activities like horseback riding, golf, fishing, hiking, volleyball and snorkeling excursions.
