Based out of Pretoria, South Africa, ZwavelStream Clinic is a private psychiatric hospital that provides high-end, patient-centered services to clients struggling with a wide variety of behavioral health issues. ZwavelStream has a mission statement of de-stigmatizing and de-institutionalizing mental health. As a result, the atmosphere is more in line with a private residential treatment program than a standard hospital.
Accommodations and Food
The clinic itself is located on roughly 25 acres of land in the Bronberg Mountains, surrounded by free-roaming antelope and other wildlife. As mentioned, the facility is comfortably-outfitted and strives to appear non-clinical, with a total of 60 beds available in private and semi-private rooms. Residents can expect to stay in rooms with modern decor, quilted full-size beds, lots of natural light and standing armoires.
ZwavelStream also boasts meditative gardens throughout the property, walking paths, WiFi throughou, therapy rooms, a gym and an on-site coffee shop. Throughout their stay, all residents eat three healthy meals a day in an on-site cafeteria, plus snacks.
Treatment and Staff
Before beginning treatment, all participants go through an initial intake and assessment process to help the staff determine their needs and medical history. As a fully-equipped psychiatric hospital, those in need of detox or stabilization services can get them on-site before continuing to treatment.
Though each program is different, treatment typically includes both individual and group therapy with evidence-based practices including CBT, DBT and EMDR, though the specifics may vary by practitioner. Though residents can attend for virtually any issue they may have, the facility specializes in issues of trauma, anxiety, bipolar, personality disorders, self-harm, addiction and depression. Dual diagnosis support and medication management services are both available. While 12-step participation is not required, clients can be referred to meetings upon request.
The staff at ZwavelSteam Clinic consists of a large team of psychologists, psychiatrists, occupational therapists, physiotherapists and additional support staff.
Extras
Other offerings at ZwavelStream Clinic include special services for clients with disabilities as well as a wide range of recreational activities including volleyball, table tennis and mini-golf. The facility also has a media library where residents can check out books and DVDs for entertainment during downtime.
In addition to the psychiatric services, flexible physical therapy and occupational therapy sessions are also available. Transportation services can also be arranged for whenever necessary.
Upon completing a primary care plan, residents can work with their clinical team to develop step-down aftercare and discharge plans whenever necessary, sometimes including outpatient therapy through the hospital.
