Zumbro Valley Health Center has been providing outpatient substance abuse services for more than 30 years. The rehab has two locations in Rochester, Minnesota, about 80 miles south of Minneapolis, and treats chemical dependency as an illness. It offers client-centered treatment plans to combat addiction and co-occurring disorders.

Treatment and Staff

Zumbro Valley Health Center refers people requiring  detox or residential treatment to an outside provider. The main facility on Woodlake Drive in Rochester treats only substance abuse clients, who meet twice a week for 90-minute group sessions. An LADC uses DBT to facilitate groups, which are limited to eight participants at a time. Duration of the program can vary, but clients typically remain in treatment for three months. Topics include addiction studies, coping skills and stress reduction techniques. Individual sessions are scheduled twice a month. There are four LADCs on staff and one clinical director. While Zumbro Valley Health Center is not 12-step oriented, counselors do suggest AA/NA  meetings for clients who need additional support.

Those with co-occurring disorders are referred to the Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) located at the 29th Street facility. Clients meet five days a week for two-hour sessions, either in the morning or evening. As with the outpatient program, an LADC facilitates each group, with the addition of a Master’s-level therapist specializing in harm reduction techniques. There are three LADCs, two Master’s-level therapists and three psychiatrists on staff at this location along with a clinical director, so any necessary medications can be prescribed and managed. Clients meet with their primary therapists for individual therapy once a week. The duration of the IOP is six months, but clients start to cut down on the number of weekly group therapy sessions by the third month.

Extras

The intensive, outpatient-based Opiates Recovery program addresses the underlying conditions and issues of addiction through evidence-based practices, using group therapy supplemented with individual sessions.

While Zumbro Valley Health Center does not have an adolescent substance abuse program, it does offer an adolescent peer group on Tuesday afternoons from 4 pm to 6 pm. Facilitated by one of the LADCs, this group focuses on kids who have tried drinking or drugs and got caught. Adolescents who are deemed chronic users are referred to other programs. Group size is limited to six.

In Summary

Zumbro Valley Health Center has an experienced staff and a long legacy of treating addicts and alcoholics in southern Minnesota. The more intense program for dual diagnosis sufferers is a plus and both programs appear to be long enough in duration and meet frequently enough during the week to effect real change.
