Atlantic, Iowa City HallThe Basics

Located in Atlantic, Iowa, a small town about 60 miles east of Omaha, Nebraskaand operated by the Iowa Department of Public Health, Zion Recovery Services is a halfway house that gives men the opportunity to continue a clean and sober lifestyle after inpatient treatment. Somewhere between outpatient treatment and sober living, men are required to attend classes, group therapy, individual counseling and meetings, as well as begin to take responsibility for themselves and their past actions through 12-step work. Unlike other sober livings, residents of Zion are not allowed to leave the property for outside obligations.

Accommodations and Amenities

The grounds and living quarters are simple and utilitarian. All required classes, groups, counseling sessions and 12-step meetings are within walking distance of the facility or are held on the premises. Bedrooms accommodate between one and five men (depending on the size) and come equipped with single beds, dressers, night stands and wall units for personal storage. There is one bathroom with four stalls and a communal shower room with two individual showers.

Cable is provided and men are allowed to relax and watch TV at night once they have completed all their requirements for the day. There is also outdoor basketball, volleyball, horseshoes and putt-putt golf available for clients to enjoy during their free time. All electronic devices are banned and there is no Internet available.

All meals are provided and prepared by an on-site cook.

Rules and Regulations

Clients are required to complete at least a 30-day inpatient drug treatment program before transitioning into Zion. Once they have been admitted, they are asked to commit to at least a three-month stay, although they can stay for up to six months.

All men living at Zion must attend five weekly AA/NA meetings, which are held on-site; clients are not allowed to attend outside meetings. There are 50 to 55 mandatory group sessions each week, where clients are taught to take responsibility for past and present behavior. The program also relies heavily on peer-to-peer support, with the men holding each other accountable for poor decisions and actions.

There is a zero-tolerance policy for the use of mind-altering substances. This includes sharing prescription medication and not taking medication as prescribed. Random drug testing is conducted by staff members and, if a client doesn’t test clean, he is immediately discharged from the facility. Threats and physical violence toward other residents is also grounds for discharge.

Every resident is required to keep his personal space neat, clean and organized. They are also responsible for cleaning bathrooms, the shower room and common areas of the house on a regular basis.

Extras

Zion doesn’t run credit checks on potential residents. Instead, it charges monthly fees on a sliding fee basis or accepts clients who qualify for Iowa’s Medicaid services. It also accepts men who have qualified for the Iowa Plan for Behavioral Health block grant. Out-of-state residents are expected to self-pay.

In Summary

The program at Zion provides men with a a structured, safe and sober environment so they may focus solely on maintaining sobriety. Clients learn responsibility and developing personal accountability through peer support, group therapy and individual counseling. Zion strives to give them the confidence they need to continue productive, sober lives long after they have left the program.
