Zen Recovery Path1The Basics

In 2012,  Mathew Carver, who is a certified instructor of Qi Gong, Tai Chi, versed in traditional Chinese medicine, meditation and Kung Fu, founded Zen Recovery Path in Costa Mesa, California. Carver, who previously worked at numerous rehab facilities in California over the years, wanted to blend ancient Far East healing traditions with empirical evidence based substance abuse treatment and psychotherapy in creating ZRP.

ZRP offers holistic outpatient treatment with the option for clients to reside at nearby sober living facilities rather than traditional inpatient treatment. Clients are picked up from their houses around 8 am and stay in treatment until 3 pm. Participants also have the option to remain in their own housing, sober living is recommended. Random drug testing is utilized as a measure of compliance, but natural herbal supplements are permitted to fight side effects of withdrawal.

Accommodations and Food

Housing is provided at third party sober living homes and out of the three available to choose from, each is able to take in six to nine clients. ZRP’s day program accommodates 15 to 20 at a time and nine to 15 in the evening program. The recommended houses all have house managers but dramatically varying rules, some being much more strict than others. Some provide 12-step meetings every day and some allow no medication at all. At all three houses, however, clients have chores to do and are responsible for doing their own shopping and cooking.

Treatment and Staff

ZRP offers several treatment options. The homonymous Zen Recovery Path is an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) that runs six hours per day six days per week. It is completely customizable–offering options such as Tai Chi, psychology, relapse prevention, martial arts and meditation. It can be tailored to any schedule. The basic outpatient option runs two or three times a week for two to three hours per day.

The Zen Mountain Path is a track inspired and modeled after an Edo Period Japanese Samurai village. Through ZMP clients are exposed to rugged terrain and nature. They experience holistic therapy, psychotherapy, group process and relapse prevention geared to help those with chronic relapse issues. Hiking, fishing and many other outdoor activities are part of this option. It accepts six participants at a time.

Finally, the Zen Evening Path may be entered after successfully completing either of the day options, which run Mondays through Fridays 9 am to 3 pm for 30 hours a week. Once a client is stable enough to get a job, they may switch over to ZEP which runs Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 5:30 to 8:30 pm for nine hours per week. Group therapy is offered two to three days a week, for two to three hours at a time.

In all programs, clients are assigned their own case manager and lead therapist with whom they have weekly individual therapy. Notably, the head ZRP therapist is a trauma specialist. In cases where a psychiatrist is necessary, a third party is called and comes in. While ZRP does not offer detox it does work with other programs that do. However, clients have to pay for such treatment separately.

Extras

The cost of a month’s treatment includes the price of sober living housing as well as a weekly $75 food card, regardless of the type of treatment an individual chooses. A 30-day gym membership is also included for every client.

In Summary

Insurance usually covers treatment at Zen Recovery Path despite its slightly unconventional set up. All in all, although it is technically an outpatient program, ZRP services cost about the same as an economical inpatient treatment. This is a great choice for those who may be looking for an alternative to inpatient treatment and the 12 step approach, as well as those who are are seeking the path of Eastern philosophy.
