Yselta del Sur Pueblo

The Basics

A U.S. Federally recognized Native American tribe and sovereign nation, Yselta del Sur Pueblo is located near El Paso, Texas, just north of the Rio Grande. Ysleta del Sur Pueblo has approximately 3,500 members, many of whom are employed in its robust cattle ranching business. For twenty years, the tribe has operated an outpatient substance abuse program, Alcohol and Substance Abuse Program (ASAP) on its reservation. ASAP treats adults and adolescents. For tribal members in need of inpatient and detox services, Yselta partners with neighboring facilities in the area.

ASAP provides evidence-based treatment in a culturally-sensitive framework that emphasizes “community strength, family support, culture and traditions.”

Treatment and Staff

Ysleta’s outpatient programs only serve tribal members and are six months in duration. Treatment includes individual and group therapy with one-on-one sessions typically scheduled once a week. The frequency of group therapy is adjusted as clients progress through their treatment plan.

The program has dedicated groups and therapists to help clients with co-occuring disorders. The treatment teams include addiction counselors such as CADCs, an LMSW and a psychiatrist. Clients whose addiction levels exceed the ASAP’s capabilities are referred to inpatient facilities that ASAP has contracted with to provide care for their clients. The tribe also maintains contracts with mental health clinics to serve its clients with those with severe mental health diagnoses.

ASAP’s counselors use CBT and the 12-step framework. While clients are not required to attend 12-step meetings, they are strongly encouraged. The tribe hosts a 12-step meeting each month on the reservation and transports clients to local meetings to encourage participation.

Extras

ASAP provides unlimited aftercare. After completing the initial six-month treatment plan, clients can attend a weekly relapse prevention group for as long as they’d like. ASAP also provides prevention programs in the local schools using the Positive Action curriculum and coordinates care with local schools to provide intervention to high-risk youth. Ysleta del Sur Pueblo offers a full range of primary care services, acupuncture and herbology.

In Summary

Ysleta del Sur Pueblo Alcohol and Substance Abuse Program (ASAP) offers outpatient substance abuse services that are culturally-relevant to its tribe members. With treatment tailored to the specific needs of tribal members, mental health treatment is integrated into the program and maintaining contracts with numerous other addiction treatment providers in the area, Ysleta del Sur Pueblo’s ASAP ensures that tribe members will have access to every resource necessary as they enter recovery.
