Covington LouisianaThe Basics

When  judicial court judge Judge John W. Greene noticed the need for a service organization for at-risk youth in his community in 1982, the Covington Junior Service League took on the project. The Youth Services Bureau was soon created and has since become a network of support and resources serving the Louisiana community.

YSB offers a wide range programs for children and adolescents including outpatient substance abuse treatment, behavioral health services, advocacy programs for youth dealing with legal issues and support for families with at-risk children in both St. Tammany and Washington Parishes. Treatment is evidence based and serves to create strong youth and families.

Treatment and Staff

The substance abuse treatment program at YSB—known as Options—is an outpatient program for adolescents with a focus on family involvement and the 12-steps. The comprehensive program starts with an assessment of the client, which includes family members to develop an individualized treatment program. Staff uses CBT and treatment includes daily group therapy, weekly individual sessions and bi-weekly family therapy.

The 12-steps are also an integral part of the program and attendance of weekly meetings is mandatory. Additionally, 12-step workbooks and literature are used during group study sessions. Weekly drug screenings are also mandatory.

The staff at YSB consists of LADCs, MFTs and LPCs.

Extras

In addition to their comprehensive outpatient treatment program, YSB also offers a range of social and community services. Both “Crossroads” and “F.I.N.S.” (Families In Need of Services) are prevention and intervention programs for juvenile offenders that focus on education, service and counseling.

CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) for children liaises volunteers with children in the court system who have been abused. Finally, TASC is a truancy reduction and prevention program for students in grades K through 5.

There are also parent groups and education seminars for family and loved ones that focus on parenting skills, building trust, relapse prevention and addiction education.

In Summary

The substance abuse treatment program at YSB is an ideal choice for parents seeking a family intensive program for their at-risk adolescent. With CBT based individual, group and family therapies as well as 12-step work, young people and their families are well served by the comprehensive behavioral health services.
