chicago illinoisThe Basics

Initially founded in 1975 as a response to concern for at-risk youth and the prevalence of drug abuse in the community, Youth Service Project has grown into an organization with a wide range of services for children, adolescents and young adults in the central Chicago, Illinois community.

YSP offers a comprehensive network of resources and cultural activities including an outpatient program for young people struggling with addiction and substance abuse. By providing education, intervention and prevention, Humboldt Park neighborhood youth are given tools to navigate their lives free of drug abuse. Clients receive evidence based care through individual and group therapy and upon completion of the program further support with aftercare.

Treatment and Staff

The YSP outpatient program begins with an assessment of the client and an individualized treatment plan is developed based on their unique circumstances. The length of the program is typically anywhere from three to nine months but will vary depending on both the recovery plan and how well the client progresses through treatment.

Treatment involves two group sessions per week and two monthly individual sessions. Group sessions cover topics such as self-esteem, relapse prevention, how to build family relationships, addiction education and independent living skills. Although treatment does not use the 12-step method of recovery, basic principles are borrowed and incorporated into therapy—such as taking responsibility for one’s actions and making amends for past behaviors.

The staff at YSP consists of LSWs and clinical psychologists.

Extras

In addition to YSP’s substance abuse program, a variety of social services and programs are available for neighborhood youth. Young people are given the opportunity to express themselves creatively at “To The Moon,” an after-school arts and cultural program for children between the ages of five and 11. Projects focus on cultural identity and expressing individuality. Homework help and tutoring is also available. An independent living program for youth preparing to live on their own following high school is available, as are anti-bullying programs, counseling services, leadership programs and career building seminars. Additionally, a transitional living program assists young women between the ages of 17 and 21 who are in the process of leaving the state child welfare agency.

There are intervention services as well as an aftercare program that allows recovering clients to return for individual sessions after completing the substance abuse program.  Sessions are offered as needed, tapering off over the course of 90 days.

In Summary

YSP’s outpatient services treat young people in central Chicago using an individualized treatment plan with focus on the specific challenges of the community it serves. With therapy, aftercare planning and an assortment of cultural and enrichment programs, YSP offers children, adolescents and young adults a wide range of opportunities to build fulfilling lives free of the hazards of drugs and alcohol.
