Based out of Boise, Idaho, You Counseling is the private practice of Bethany Burgess, an LSW who provides individualized outpatient counseling and treatment plans for clients struggling with eating disorders and related behavioral health issues. While Burgess’s in-person practice is based out of Boise, telehealth counseling services are also available to clients living throughout Idaho and in Alaska as well. Adults ages 18 and older are welcome to attend.
Treatment and Staff
Before beginning a program, all participants go through an initial intake and assessment process to help determine their needs and medical history. As an outpatient program, on-site detox or stabilization services are not available though referrals can be made whenever necessary. Throughout the program, clients attend regular individual therapy rooted in evidence-based practices, primarily Enhanced Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT-E).
While similar to standard CBT practices, CBT-E is more specifically aimed at why participants’ thought processes are getting caught on food-related behaviors. Unlike some eating disorder treatment facilities, You Counseling is focused primarily on the cognitive processes underlying eating disorders rather than on actual food preparation and eating processes. As a result, on-site nutritional counseling, meal planning or meal exposure therapy is not included; instead, the focus is on changing clients’ thoughts about these processes for healthier outcomes. While basic dual diagnosis support may be available for issues of depression and anxiety, those in need of more intensive care may need to seek additional help elsewhere. Similarly, 12-step participation can be included but isn’t necessarily required.
As a private practice, the staff at You Counseling consists primarily of Burgess herself, who holds LCSW and CDCI certifications.
Before treatment begins, the organization does offer free initial 15-minute phone conferences to determine if counseling would be a good fit. As mentioned, those who can’t make it into counseling in person can also do telecounseling if they live in Alaska or Idaho. Finally, referrals to further services are available whenever necessary along with discharge and aftercare planning.
In all, You Counseling provides personalized, outpatient-based care for adults dealing with negative thoughts associated with mental illness. As a private practice, the entire program consists of individual therapy with a focus on CBT-E to help participants learn healthier thought patterns with regards to food. While clients in need of more extensive medical or psychiatric help may want to seek additional support elsewhere, You Counseling remains a strong resource for those living in Alaska and Idaho.
