The Basics

Yamhill County Health and Human Services provides publicly funded behavioral health, developmental disabilities and public health services to all residents of Yamhill County. As part of its service to the community, Yamhill County Health and Human Services also offers outpatient treatment for chemical dependency and co-occurring disorders on a sliding scale, all from an inconspicuous office building in McMinnville, one of the first districts of Oregon.

Treatment and Staff

The first step in treatment is a 90-minute assessment with a CADC, who develops an individualized treatment plan for each client, depending on need. Yamhill County doesn’t offer detox or residential services, but its counselors can arrange for this level of care when necessary. Because this is a mental health facility, dual diagnosis support is available.

Treatment at Yamhill County is based on group and individual therapy and the 12 steps. Sample session topics include proper parenting, being a functioning member of the community, coping skills and relapse prevention. Group size can vary from five to 18 people at a time. All clients are expected to attend outside 12-step meetings, to get a sponsor and to begin working the steps. Family therapy and social work are also available to clients on an as-needed basis.

The most structured level of care is the Enhanced Chemical Dependency Outpatient Treatment Program, or EOP. EOP clients often come in for treatment six days a week, seeing multiple therapists and a psychiatrist. Many of these clients actually need residential care, but are waiting for a bed to open up.

Regular outpatient treatment at Yamhill County is often used as a continuation of residential care. Clients return home from treatment and step into outpatient services, attending daily groups all the way down to once a week. Which groups and what frequency depends on the counselor’s diagnosis.

Treatment for dual diagnosis clients is integrated directly into substance abuse services. These clients get diagnosis specific therapy, utilizing MET and focusing on skill building, relapse prevention and positive self-esteem.

First group meetings begin at 6:30 am Monday through Saturday and the last one starts at 5:30 pm. There are four to six group sessions offered during the day, in addition to one-on-one counseling. Yamhill County employs between 15 and 18 staff members in its substance abuse program, all with CADC credentials. If clients have a preference for a female or male staff member for counseling they can ask during the assessment (though there are no guarantees).

Extras

Clients have access to the community center across the street from the outpatient offices.

Family programming at Yamhill County is scheduled on a per client basis and may involve individual therapy with or without the client present.

Yamhill County also offers certain groups in Spanish, treatment for compulsive gambling, DUI classes and Drug Court services. There is also a transitional care program designed to offer sober housing and social services for women who have either lost their children or are in danger of losing their children, due to substance abuse issues.

In Summary

Yamhill County Health and Human Services is a solid, basic chemical dependency program that also offers dual diagnosis support. Considering its sliding scale cost (clients can end up paying nothing), family programming, transitional care and credentialed staff members, this is a deal that could hit the recovery spot.
