Toppenish WashingtonThe Basics

Yakama Nation Comprehensive Community Alcoholism Program offers recovery services to Native Americans who live on or near the Yakama Nation reservation in Toppenish, Washington. This outpatient program’s services include individual, group and family counseling and is extended to adults, adolescents and DUI/DWI offenders. Yakama Nation is a federally recognized tribe based on the east side of the Cascade Mountain range bordering the Yakima river. Their tribe includes members of the Klikitat, Palus, Wallawalla, Wanapam, Wenatchi, Wishram and Yakama people.

Treatment and Staff

Intake staff conducts a thorough biopsychosocial assessment of clients prior to treatment. The YNP outpatient program is an ASAM-certified Level I program and as such provides a holistic approach to treatment requiring up to nine hours per week of individual and group counseling, education and family counseling. Group discussion topics include relapse prevention, identifying problem behaviors and triggers, coping skills, building emotional health and wellness and the medical effects and repercussions of addiction. Group counseling occurs one or more times a week, depending on the client’s need. Length of treatment is determined by the client’s history of alcohol abuse and other environmental factors. Individual counseling is available as often as needed.

The YNP utilizes the White Bison Curriculum program known as “Wellbriety”—a culturally sensitive program that focuses on community healing as an integral part of the individual’s recovery. Wellbriety’s main goal is to heal inter-generational trauma by addressing negative behaviors in the client. Trained Certified Chemical Dependency Counselors facilitate group processing of social and cultural traumas experienced within a specific Native American tribe. Groups re-teach clients life skills based on cultural paradigms such as parenting and family communication. Counselors and participants learn effective ways to raise children, build healthy relationships and to reacquaint themselves with the peaceful and spiritual aspects of tribal customs.

Elders, leaders and youth take part in the “healing circles” to open communication in the community. The program shows clients that facing addiction requires the help of a wider community of Native Americans who have experienced addiction throughout their history as a people.

YNP is not a 12-step program, but counselors encourage client’s to attend off-site AA/NA meetings for additional support.

In Summary

YNP is a reputable outpatient treatment center that uses alternative healing methods tailored for the specific needs of the Native community in the East Cascades of Washington state. YNP employs a mixture of nationally-certified recovery criteria and a curriculum specific to the Yakama Tribe. Native American clients will not “go it alone” in recovery, as community is the key to addressing alcohol and drug abuse.
