The Basics
Wyoming Behavioral Institute (WBI) is a mental health provider in Casper, Wyoming’s second largest city. This private hospital is led by two medical directors and specializes in psychiatric care. The facility is able to offer clients dual-diagnosis support in detox as well as in an outpatient capacity. An Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) is available to adults and seniors 65 and older. Licensed clinicians are on call for psychiatric emergencies and on-site evaluations.
Treatment and Staff
At WBI, the Psychiatric Assessment Team (PAT) offers free and comprehensive assessments to prospective clients. The PAT presents results of the assessments to a psychiatrist on staff. If the psychiatrist approves, a client is admitted to inpatient chemical detox for three to five days. Chemical detox includes medication-assisted treatment and individual therapy. Detox is available in the adult mental health unit of the WBI hospital. The WBI hospital is a lockdown facility to insure the safety of clients during their stay. Client rooms are large, with private baths. The unit includes day rooms and retreat areas for space and privacy during family visits. It is up to the client to follow-up on treatment for recovery after being discharged. Staff make referrals for clients to residential, IOP or outpatient treatment. Clients may choose to continue at WBI and step down progressively, from detox, to IOP then regular outpatient.
The WBI outpatient facility offers mental health services and IOP. The intake team processes client assessments, provides evaluations and presents diagnoses. Staff screen for the extent of substance use and the presence of potential psychiatric disorders. The intake team works with clients to develop individualized treatment plans. Length of treatment is anywhere from four to 12 weeks.
IOP clients attend group three days a week for at least two hours each day. Groups utilize CBT and DBT and topics include anger management, relapse prevention and illness management and recovery. Gender-specific groups and family education are also available. Clients attend hour-long individual therapy sessions once a week. There are 12-step support groups available on-site. Staff assist clients with medication management in addition to IOP treatment. When clients have completed treatment, staff provide discharge planning services.
The WBI programs are licensed by the state of Wyoming’s Department of Health. The staff includes nurses, LCSWs, LPCs, substance abuse counselors, psychologists, psychiatrists, physicians’ assistants, mental health technicians and a hospital chaplain.
Extras
Expressive therapy using art, music, poetry, creative writing within the context of counseling is offered as a means for clients to tap into their emotions creatively.

Wyoming Behavioral Institute provides thorough care for individuals in the acute stages of early recovery. This is a great choice of those with co-occurring disorders, who have a diverse staff of mental health and health professionals at their disposal to assist with detox and the psychological transition into recovery. The hospital inpatient unit provides a more comfortable place for clients to detox than a typical clinical setting. Wyoming Behavioral Institute may be in the heart of cowboy country, but it is a stable, safe environment to begin recovery.
