Woody GeissmannThe Basics

Woody Geissmann, LADC, is the CEO and founder of Right Turn, which is a facility that provides substance abuse intervention, outpatient and aftercare services that are geared towards creative and artistic clientele. Right Turn treats addiction and co-occurring disorders, including gambling, sex and shopping in the Boston area.

The Background

Woody Geissmann was a professional drummer with the band The Del Fuegos. After the band got their big break, getting signed to Warner Brothers,  Geissmann found himself in the throes of opioid addiction. In 1993 he left the band, went into treatment and eventually got a degree in addiction counseling from the University of Massachusetts. In 2002 he was inspired by Dr. Anne Alonso to open Right Turn, and he then trained with Dr. Judith Landau to become a certified Arise Interventionist.

The Approach

Geissmann and his colleagues at Right Turn employ a loving and gentle approach to every intervention, with the intent that the client does not feel attacked or hostile. He utilizes a couple of different intervention philosophies; the Arise method, Stages of Change and The Johnson Model of Intervention.

Since a majority of  Geissmann’s clients come to his agency during a point of crisis with the individual, he carefully designs a personalized treatment plan, and organizes a support system for the families members during and after the client has gone through the intervention. Much of his experience is working with clients who have co-occurring disorders, or are resistant to the idea of going to treatment. He works closely with the family members in selecting the appropriate facility, helping the client choose the right items to bring with them to treatment, works out all travel arrangements and coordinates with the facility on behalf of the family and the individual.

During the clients time in treatment, Right Turn offers family support groups twice a month to help them acclimate to what life will look like once their loved one returns from the facility, and their coping skills, and a monthly three hour workshop to identify triggers, and assist with relapse prevention.

Post-Intervention and Summary

Woody Geissmann and Right Turn offer a unique perspective to getting sober, which is identifying the fear that once you’re clean, you won’t have the capacity to be creative anymore. They are there to show the clients that they can be happier, healthier and live an even more exciting, creative life without the use of drugs and alcohol.
