Women's Recovery ServicesWomen’s Recovery Services Review

Since its inception in 1975, the mission of the Women’s Recovery Services in Santa Rosa, California has been to break the cycle of addiction for women, allowing them to live with their young children while learning the skills necessary to live sober lives. Just off the 101 Freeway in scenic Northern California and only a few miles from the Pacific Ocean—Women’s Recovery Services is a safe haven founded on the principles of the 12-step model of recovery.

Accommodations and Food

The Women’s Recovery Services facility houses treatment and residences together. Up to 20 women and 12 children share fully furnished apartments, a communal building with kitchen and common space for group and class meetings, meals and social time as well as administrative offices and medical services. Not all of the residents bring kids, but everyone sleeps in a twin bed with a roommate.

There is also a children’s program building with both indoor and outdoor play areas equipped for children infants to age 12, including a playhouse, swings, slide, picnic table and climbing structures.

Clients plan, prepare for and clean up after, meals themselves. Everyone does her own laundry and daily chores. This is an intense life-skills program; no TV, cell phones or computers allowed.

Treatment and Staff

Women’s Recovery Services offers a 120-day residential treatment program that is both 12-step and therapy-based. Classes focus on Seeking Safety, stress management, domestic violence, parenting and relationships. The majority of the day is spent in a group therapy setting, but each client sees her individual therapist once a week. The recovery classes and group sessions take six hours out of the day and AA (both on- and off-site) is provided seven days a week. Nicotine cessation information and support is provided.

There is no MD on staff but there is a medical director that comes in and sees the clients once a week. Detox is not provided but dual diagnosis support is. The staff consists of highly credentialed therapists and medical professionals as well as peer counselors.

Extras

The family programming is the stand out at Women’s Recovery Services. A parenting educator provides classes on parenting in recovery and also meets with each of the mothers individually. Clients learn about child development and behavioral meanings and motives. The goal here is to promote understanding and prevent child abuse. While their mothers are learning proper parenting tools, the children are being cared for by the staff—playing games, making art, horsing around on the playground, taking naps.

The visitation program at Women’s Recovery Services is for children not living at the facility. They can come in during lunchtime or after program hours as well as on weekend afternoons or overnights. If family and friends want to visit, they can do so on the weekends after the first 30 days of treatment.

In Summary

Women’s Recovery Services provides a solution for families broken by a mother’s addiction. The extensive family programming, parenting classes and life skills training are practical tools for sober living. Mothers learn how to take care of themselves and their children here.
