Founded in 1974, the Women’s Odyssey Organization is a non-profit that operates a residential treatment home in Canoga Park, California that caters to women suffering from alcohol and drug addiction. The program lasts six to nine months and is based in the 12 steps, aiming to provide a safe, intimate and spiritual recovery experience for all its residents.
Accommodations and Food
Located in a quiet, residential neighborhood of Los Angeles’ San Fernando Valley—close to shopping, churches and public transportation—the home can accommodate up to 10 clients at a time, with residents sharing rooms with one other woman. Bedrooms come equipped with twin beds, end tables and closet space to share. There are several common areas areas with couches, cable TV and internet access, which clients are allowed to use during downtime. The home also has a spacious backyard and patio area. Because the program is designed to teach independent living skills, all residents buy their own groceries and cook their own meals.
Treatment and Staff
What makes Women’s Odyssey unique from many other residential treatment programs is that all clients are required to get a job, go back to school or do volunteer work shortly after entering treatment—operating much like a sober living facility. Using the social model approach to treatment, clients are required to engage in daily group and weekly individual therapy, and provide peer support for their housemates. They are expected to attend regular on and off-site AA/NA meetings, get a sponsor and maintain their sobriety. Regular and random drug screenings will be conducted.
As mentioned, the average stay is six to nine months. The staff of Women’s Odyssey are employees of the non-profit organization and volunteers, including board members, a mouse manager and administrative staff. No medical or psychiatric services are provided on-site, but referrals can be provided if necessary.
Additional services provided are classes for anger management, grief and loss, domestic violence, relapse prevention, resume writing and job application, vocational skills, personal appearance enhancement, personal finances, HIV/AIDS education and court-approved parenting classes.
Women’s Odyssey offers a unique and intimate program for women. Allowing clients to immediately reintegrate to life, the women get the benefit of flexible treatment, peer support and an introduction to 12-step recovery while they begin to rebuild their lives in the real world. Attending off-site meetings also allows the women to find a home in the local recovery network, obtain a sponsor and position themselves for a smooth transition into independent sober living. For women in the LA area looking for more accountability than outpatient treatment but more flexibility and self-sufficiency than traditional inpatient, Women’s Odyssey is a great option.
