Wolf Creek Academy Review

Located in Mars Hill, North Carolina, Wolf Creek Academy is a faith-based, therapeutic boarding school that offers counseling and education services to adolescent girls and boys. The school is open to girls who are between 13 and 17 and to boys between 14 and 17. The facility is designed specifically for teens who have struggled with academic achievement issues, ADD, trauma, depression and other behavioral health issues.

Accommodations and Food

Residents at Wolf Creek Academy are housed in gender-separate shared cottages, with room for approximately 18 to 22 students. The cottages are each set up like small homes, each with about six residents overseen by house parents and assistants who live in the home as well. Bedrooms are shared and come complete with twin beds, dressers and basic, rustic decorations. The rest of the home includes a kitchenette, bathrooms and common living areas as well. Because the facility is out in the country, the campus also includes plenty of grassy outdoors where clients can play and relax during down time.

Treatment and Staff

Before beginning a program, all clients go through an initial intake process and academic testing to determine their history and where to place them in the program. In general, residents follow a schedule much like any normal school, with students waking up around 6 am to attend classes and counseling until mid-afternoon. While not attending classes, residents are also required to complete basic chores around the house and to attend regular Bible study groups as well. Because the organization is Christian-oriented, the school curriculum reflects Christian teachings in addition to the state-mandated curriculum to get students ready for testing and college courses.

While there are licensed counselors on site who can work with students using evidence-based treatment practices, the facility is non-medical and dual diagnosis support is not available. Those in need of medication can make appointments with nearby psychiatrists as well. The staff at Wolf Creek Academy consists of LPCs, LMHCs, teachers, houseparents, administrative staff and additional Master’s-level counselors.

Extras

In addition to the counseling and educational services, the school also takes students on outdoor excursions which can include hiking, rock climbing, wakeboarding, sledding and snowboarding.

The school also offers liaison services to help its students take standardized tests, apply for colleges and more.

In Summary

Overall, Wolf Creek Academy offers a unique approach to both counseling and education for troubled teens. In addition to behavioral counseling, the facility houses its residents on-site, teaches them Christian-based lessons and helps prepare them for further education. While attending this school would mark a drastic lifestyle change for any potential residents, Wolf Creek Academy remains an option worth considering for teens who have had issues with more traditional schooling.
