Wits Inn Recovery Review
Wits Inn Recovery opened in Orange County, California in 1990. Founded by a former husband and wife team who are both in recovery, the facility focused on individual substance abuse counseling and intervention services in the early years. It has since expanded to also include detox, residential treatment and outpatient care.
Accommodations and Food
The Wits Inn Recovery facility accommodates 15 men and 15 women in gender-specific buildings. The men are housed in rooms with three to four other residents, while women live with one or two other clients. Furnishings include bunk or twin beds, dressers, lamps and desks. The facility has a coed exercise room, which includes weights and a pool. Smoking is permitted outside in designated areas.
Residents are served three healthy meals a day and snacks in a dining room. There are also vending machines available on site.
Treatment and Staff
Prior to admission, clients receive comprehensive assessments, along with individualized treatment plans. Treatment is usually 30 to 60 days, but varies depending on the person. Those in need of medically-supervised detox are housed off-site at a clinical facility during that process and move to the main location after three to five days.
Weekly treatment includes group and individual therapy, case management and addiction education. Wits Inn Recovery utilizes evidence-based practices, specifically CBT and Motivational Enhancement Therapy (MET). The women’s program includes trauma-focused therapy, specifically Seeking Safety. Twelve-step recovery principles are heavily incorporated into this program, with on-site meetings daily and the residents being transported to AA/NA in the community several times a week. Clients participate in a minimum of five daily groups and one weekly individual session. Groups are mainly gender-responsive and focus on topics like anger management, relapse prevention, triggers, co-occurring disorders and relationship issues.
The outpatient options include an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) and standard outpatient care. The outpatient programs are designed for those either transitioning out of the residential program or who need treatment but can’t take time away from work, school or family commitments. IOP generally consists of three group sessions per week, but can be customized to meet the needs of each client. Outpatient is typically one group per week and one individual session per month for a duration of three months.
Loriann Witte is the co-founder and lead interventionist at Wits Inn, she is a Certified Addictions Counselor (CAC) and a Certified Intervention Professional (CIP). The rest of the staff includes LCSWs and CADCs. Dual diagnosis support is included and clients requiring psychiatric medication are referred to a psychiatrist.
Extras
Life skills classes are provided as a supplement to addiction treatment. Topics include parenting, vocational readiness, health and literacy improvement. The facility offers a family program for loved ones. Aftercare and local sober living referrals are provided.
