The Basics
Founded in 1987, Winona Counseling Center in Winona, Minnesota is the flagship program of what is now a collaborative organization of outpatient clinics for mental health and chemical dependency that also includes Associates in Counseling, La Crosse Counseling and Christian Counseling Clinic. With two locations in Winona and La Crosse, the programs serve children, teens and adults of Winona, Houston, Fillmore, Olmstead, Wabasha, Monroe, Buffalo, Vernon, Trempealeau and La Crosse counties.
Purchased in 2000 by Michelle Johnson, a Master’s-level therapist with multiple credentials, she serves as director for the organization.
Treatment and Staff
Both facilities are open from 8 am to 8 pm, Monday thru Friday, or by appointment on Saturdays. Winona Counseling Center is essentially a network of independent therapists and support staff who provide treatment so each client’s program is individualized and can vary significantly. However, all treatment utilizes evidence-based treatment methods including individual therapy as well as 12-step principles. Referrals to meetings are provided as needed. In addition to substance abuse treatment, clients may also be referred to Adult Children of Alcoholics (ACoA) groups and discuss related topics in session.
Staff consists of five primary counselors with a range of credentials including psychologists, LPCs, Licensed MFTs, CADCs, CSACs and Master’s-level social workers. School counselors are available for younger clients, as well as spiritual counselors for those seeking Christian-based treatment. Medication management is also available.
Extras
In addition to chemical dependency, the facilities treat clients with gambling addiction, marriage and family issues and provides couples counseling. Meditation classes are also available.
Winona Counseling Center also offers professional consultants for families, couples, businesses, churches and other non-profits. Additionally, support for co-occurring disorders such as anxiety, depression, eating disorders, ADHD, PTSD and personality disorders is also available.

Overall, Winona Counseling Clinic is an organization with a network of facilities offering highly customizable and intimate treatment plans for a variety of issues. With two locations providing substance abuse treatment, it offers support to numerous counties in both Minnesota and Wisconsin. While those in need of more intensive treatment may require a residential facility, Winona Counseling Clinic and its affiliates are a strong outpatient resource for those in the region.
