Dana Point, CaliforniaThe Basics

Founded in 2009 by Kim O’Donnell, who was once court-ordered to treatment and now has been clean and sober for 17 years, Wings of Hope Sober Living provides safe sober living for a small group of women in beautiful Capistrano Beach, California. O’Donnell is a certified addiction treatment counselor, and works as the admissions director at PCH Treatment Center. The name, Wings of Hope was inspired by a butterfly’s complete metamorphosis. O’Donnell uses the butterfly’s transformation from a caterpillar into a beautiful winged creature as a metaphor for her own life, as well as symbolizing her mission which is to help her clients transform, find hope and build new lives. To honor the namesake, O’Donnell has a butterfly garden at the house, which is used for meditation.

Accommodations and Amenities

Wings of Hope is a modern gray 4,000 square foot tri-level house which accommodates eight women. The white-walled interior has natural wood furnishings, as well as lavish contemporary décor and a red rock fireplace. The fully equipped kitchen includes a white counter with a vase of sunflowers. Wall-to-wall windows provide a view of the tree-lined landscape. The kitchen has hanging silver pendant lights, and a marble countertop kitchen island with a stove and sunken sink.

Four women are accommodated on the ground floor, and four clients are lodged on the top floor. On the lower level, residents are paired in rooms, which include twin beds with bookcase headboards and closets. On the top level, there is a master suite that has a jacuzzi, private patio and a walk-in closet. The suite accommodates four women, who sleep on twin beds with bookcase headboards.

Clients are responsible for their own groceries, and meal preparation. Sometimes a few residents cook baked goods for the household. Amenities include Wi-Fi, cable TV, Netflix, laundry room, house computer and printer, and transportation to medical appointments, meetings and outpatient treatment. Staff lives on the premises and oversees operations.

Rules and Regulations

Prior to admission, clients must be clean and sober for a minimum of 30 days. Additionally, they undergo a comprehensive interview with O’Donnell, followed by a meeting with the house manager. They must provide several emergency family contact numbers on their release forms, which O’Donnell uses in case of relapse or any other unpredicted event. At the interview, clients must identify three short-term goals, and staff provides guidance and support as the clients work on the goals during their stay.

Residents must be active in their recovery, which includes participating in an outpatient program, attending three weekly recovery support meetings, performing household chores and being present at the house meeting. At the house meeting, women also discuss their accomplishments, resentments, concerns and house issues. A therapy session constitutes one of the three weekly meeting requirements, and clients are welcome to attend Celebrate Recovery and Smart Recovery meetings, as well as AA/NA.

Random drug and alcohol testing is conducted, and residents who have relapsed must leave the house. O’Donnell calls the resident’s emergency contact, who picks up the woman, to ensure her safety. If the woman desires to return to Wings of Hope, they must wait a minimum of 72 hours and then attend the house meeting. The remaining members of the household vote to determine the client’s residential status.

Extras

Other services include life skills coaching, court liaison for legal matters and outpatient counseling referrals. Additionally, female speakers from the local recovery community go the house on a biweekly basis and share their experiences, strengths and hope.

In Summary

Besides undergoing an interesting journey in her own recovery, O’Donnell has lost several loved ones to the disease, which has made her determined to help other women in early recovery. For women who have at least 30 days clean and sober, and are looking for a healing environment, while living in a gorgeous home, Wings of Hope might be just what they are looking for. Wings of Hope does not like to disclose their address for the safety and privacy of clients.
