The Basics
The Wilshire/Valley Therapy Center & Management and Pacific West Counseling was founded in 1993. It is a consortium of independently-licensed and highly-trained clinicians who practice throughout locations in Greater Los Angeles. Its mission is to “help clients lead more satisfying, relational and productive lives via the transformative power of healing in a psycho-therapeutic setting.”
The centers offer one-on-one, couples and family counseling for substance abuse, compulsive behavior and mental health disorders. Conditions treated include, but are not limited to, depression, ADHD, anxiety, substance abuse and co-dependence. Clinicians also provide support for parenting issues, blended families and those with health care challenges such as cancer and HIV/AIDS.
Treatment and Staff
Both short-term and intensive, long-term therapy is offered at Wilshire/Valley. Short-term therapy may last four to six sessions and address an urgent issue in the client’s life, such as the dissolution of a relationship. Long-term therapy enables the client to examine their personal history and create new behavior patterns supported by a trusting relationship with the clinician. Wilshire/Valley uses CBT, DBT as well as psychodynamic process and EMDR for trauma treatment.
If clients are struggling with addiction and compulsive behavior, their therapist may recommend they attend 12-step meetings or refer them to an outpatient or residential treatment program. The treatment team at Wilshire/Valley includes psychologists, LMFTs and LCSWs.
For families and couples, Wilshire/Valley offers a targeted three-session couples package that focuses on improving couples’ communication skills and ongoing co-parenting therapy for clients who are raising their children in separate households.
While Wilshire/Valley does not have psychiatrists on staff for dual diagnosis support, clinicians are able to provide referrals and provide coordinated care to clients already in treatment with a psychiatrist.
Extras
Wilshire/Valley provides ADD/ADHD evaluations and some clinicians have expertise in Christian and post-partum issues. Head clinician Katrina Wood, PsyD, authors the psychotherapy blog, which delves into treatment issues encountered by many clients seeking therapy. Tele-therapy over Skype is also available at the discretion of the therapist.
