The Basics

Established in 2009, Williamsburg House is a sober living facility nestled in the heart of the ultra-hip enclave of Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Clients who reside in the facilitywhich boasts a 7,000 square foot loft-style layoutstay an average of four months and can expect to continue their recovery in a highly individualized program set in the backdrop of the bustling city.

Accommodations and Amenities

Based in a converted warehouse, Williamsburg House offers luxury housing with a distinct city flair. Most clients share a room with communal bathrooms located in the hallway, but for an extra monthly cost, clients can have private rooms and their own bathroom. While the program is co-ed, with typically 20 clients in residence at a time, rooms are separated by gender.

The loft is laid out with a funky, artistic flair and features large common areas with exposed brick walls adorned with guitars, as well as cozy couches and a large dining area in an effort to promote community among the residents. There is a chef on staff who prepares a communal dinner each night for residents. Clients typically prepare their own meals for breakfast and lunch and all food is provided by the facility. Clients can also expect regular housekeeping services and on-site laundry facilities.

Rules and Regulations

Unlike many sober living facilities with strict rules for client conduct, Williamsburg House allows residents to tailor their days to best meet their recovery needs. Thus, not all clients attend an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) or standard outpatient program daily. Before their stay, clients work with Williamsburg House staff to develop a strategy for their time in residence. However, this doesn’t mean there aren’t rigorous guidelines. Clients should expect random drug testing, daily breathalyzer tests and to share their home with a labrador retriever, who doubles as a narcotic detection dog. Each client has a curfew, but again this is determined on an individual basis.

Williamsburg House does provide 24-hour staffing, but staff members serve in a case management capacity and do not provide professional counseling or therapy on site. That being said, 12-step recovery is highly emphasized at Williamsburg House and clients attend daily meetings in the neighborhood with staff accompaniment, as well as two meetings a week in the facility. Family visits are also highly encouraged.

Extras

As part of their time at Williamsburg House, clients can expect a membership to a gym located just four doors down from the facility and easy access to yoga classes held in the building, all included with their initial cost of stay. Staff-supervised weekend excursions are also provided.

In Summary

Providing luxury amenities with city aesthetics, Williamsburg House is a sober living environment that offers clients a high degree of freedom as they take the next step on their recovery journey. The facility combines an emphasis on the individual with the structure of 12-step meetings and regular drug testing to create a balanced and comfortable approach to sober living. While those looking for a more removed sober living experience set in the placid environs of nature may find the hustle and bustle of Williamsburg House’s setting to be a poor fit, those looking to enact their recovery in the heart of the city may have found a perfect spot.
