Williamsburg County Department on Alcohol and Drug AbuseThe Basics

The Williamsburg County Department on Alcohol and Drug Abuse was founded in Kingstree, South Carolina. The CARF-accredited organization operates facilities in Kingstree and Hemingway, and offers outpatient substance abuse treatment to adult men and women.

Treatment and Staff

The intake process at Williamsburg begins with an initial phone call with one of the organization’s intake coordinators. Individuals then meet with a counselor to discuss their substance abuse history. If the counselor believes the person would be a good fit, they design a treatment plan that works within his or her schedule. Clients are encouraged to apply for Medicare if they do not have insurance. If clients are in need of a more intense level of care, they can be directed to the appropriate residential treatment or detox facility.

Clients attend either one, two or three sessions of group therapy per week. The group sizes vary, but usually consist of nine to 16 clients, meeting for an hour at a time. Counselors incorporate CBT, relapse prevention and education. Groups at Kingstree meet Monday at 4pm and on Wednesdays at noon. The Hemingway location offers groups Monday at 5:00 pm and Thursdays at 10:00 am. Williamsburg County also offers groups designed to address the needs of women specifically. Those sessions are offered Tuesdays and Fridays at the Kingstree location from 9:30 am to 11:30 am. Individual therapy is scheduled accordingly for each client.

The organization usually hosts an AA meeting every Thursday evening in Kingstree. Clients are also encouraged to attend outside 12-step meetings in their own community while in treatment. Williamsburg is not dual diagnosis and refers clients with potential co-occurring disorders to outside mental health providers.

The counselors are all LADCs.

Extras

Williamsburg also offers individual family sessions with the client, counselor and their family members. Clients must initially request these meetings before the counselor can go ahead with scheduling them.

The organization also offers individual and group counseling for children and adolescent clients from ages 12 to 17 who are at risk for substance abuse. The group meetings are usually held on Tuesday afternoons but can adjust to meet the clients’ and parents’ schedules.

In Summary

Williamsburg County Department on Alcohol and Drug Abuse offers affordable outpatient treatment to adult men and women in the Kingstree and Hemingway area. The women’s support groups offer a safe environment for them to address their unique needs and issues. The variety of group times and locations allows clients to design a treatment plan that works best with their schedule and needs. Also, the weekly AA meeting offers clients the opportunity to begin building a support group outside of formalized treatment.
