WHOS RTOD Review

The We Help Ourselves (WHOS) organization provides treatment and stabilization for men and women struggling with opioid disorders. Its Residential Treatment of Opioid Dependence (RTOD) facility is in Sydney, Australia. It’s an empowering therapeutic community that strengthens physical, mental and social health. Dual diagnosis support is available but 12-step isn’t a part of the curriculum at WHOS RTOD.

Accommodations and Food

RTOD is located in the Rozelle suburb of Sydney. Situated on the campus of an old hospital, RTOD provides upscale accommodations and a therapeutic community that supports residents. The facility accommodates between 12 and 30 clients at a time, with all residents sharing bedrooms with several peers. There is around-the-clock medical supervision.

As a therapeutic community, residents are responsible for preparing many of their own meals. The menu is well-balanced with tasty and nutritious options. WHOS RTOD can accommodate clients with allergies and dietary restrictions.

Treatment and Staff

The intake team conducts an initial assessment over the phone. With one quick, confidential conversation, potential clients gain a clearer understanding of the program and the accommodations. If eligible, individuals undergo an in-person intake evaluation that includes a comprehensive account of opioid use and a personal medical history. Residents must be sober before entering residential care. If needed, WHOS RTOD can refer individuals to a local partner with detox.

Upon completion of detox, the client immediately returns to RTOD. While the length of residential treatment depends on the needs of the individual client, it typically lasts between three and four months.

The facility specializes in the use of methadone and buprenorphine to stabilize clients with opioid disorders but also understands that stabilization is not enough. Therefore it seeks to heal the “whole person” by incorporating an a range of therapeutic methods into the approach. As a result, RTOD promotes the therapeutic community model of care as a foundation of treatment.

Through the support of the therapeutic community, residents heal while learning the skills they need to succeed. In addition, clients engage in regular group therapy and feedback sessions. RTOD also provides psychoeducation classes on the disease of addiction, stress management, anger management, harm reduction and sexual wellness. Clients learn effective relapse prevention techniques such as coping mechanisms and boundaries.

The RTOD team is comprised of addiction specialists and a nursing team. Residents in need of dual diagnosis support receive medication management.

Extras

It’s worth noting, RTOD places a premium on wellness activities and recreation. As such, residents participate in a structured exercise program that includes walking, swimming, volleyball and working with a fitness trainer. An array of holistic practices are available like mindfulness meditation, yoga and Tai chi.

Many residents will transition from the residential phase into a semi-independent living situation for up to four months. Finally, RTOD also provides aftercare services and family support for residents with children.

In Summary

WHOS RTOD in Sydney, Australia is one of eight locations of the We Help Ourselves treatment organization. RTOD specializes in the treatment and stabilization of residents struggling with opioid disorders such as fentanyl and heroin. Above all, the facility offers a therapeutic community as well as relapse prevention, psychoeducation, wellness activities and group therapy. Aftercare and transitional living accommodations are also available. For anyone seeking treatment for opioids and co-occurring disorders, RTOD is an excellent option.
