WHOS OSTAR Review

We Help Ourselves (WHOS) is an Australian treatment organization. It specializes in the care of men and women struggling with addiction. The Opioid Substitution to Abstinence Residential (OSTAR) facility of WHOS in the Sydney suburb of Rozelle offers comprehensive residential care. It gears treatment towards clients struggling with opioids like fentanyl, oxycontin and heroin. OSTAR seeks to heal the “whole person” rather than merely treating symptoms. Consequently, the facility adopts the therapeutic community model because it helps to build an awareness of one’s impact in society. It’s worth noting that the 12-step recovery method is not a component of treatment here.

Accommodations and Food

The facility offers a supportive and serene atmosphere. It’s ideal for individuals beginning their recovery journey. OSTAR is in the former Rozelle hospital. Men and women are in separate units. Clients share accommodations with several peers. While residents are responsible for many daily duties, the facility provides around-the-clock supervision. Clients prepare many of their meals, with alternatives available for individuals with dietary preferences.

Treatment and Staff

Residents go through an extensive intake evaluation. It includes a complete account of alcohol and substance use in addition to a personal and family history. The OSTAR team uses these results to formulate the most effective individualized treatment strategy. They tailor it to meet the unique needs and goals of the individual.

A local medical detox program is available for clients who need it prior to beginning the program. OSTAR specializes in the use of methadone and buprenorphine as a form of Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) for opioid withdrawal. The residential phase typically lasts between three and four months. However, there is another four months of transitional housing available when needed.

The therapeutic community model is a major aspect of the programming at OSTAR. As a result, residents not only become aware of the consequences of their actions, but also experience an empowering position to make positive change. In addition, the facility offers an integrative approach to care. It incorporates a number of therapeutic methods including relapse prevention, skills groups, wellness and medical services. Clients engage in group therapy sessions rooted in ACT. The facility teaches an array of coping techniques to prevent relapse. Psychoeducation classes cover topics like sexual health, self-esteem, boundaries, communication and the disease of addiction.

The OSTAR staff has skilled addiction specialists with advanced degrees. Because of this, the team can facilitate medication management and medical services for individuals with co-occurring disorders.

Extras

Residents participate in a structured exercise routine that includes swimming and hiking. In addition, they engage in holistic practices like Tai chi and yoga.

Finally, OSTAR offers comprehensive aftercare services. This includes transitional accommodations, social gatherings and employment assistance.

In Summary

We Help Ourselves provides a comprehensive curriculum for men and women struggling with opioid disorders at the OSTAR location. In addition to methadone and buprenorphine, the facility offers evidence-based therapies, psychoeducation, relapse prevention and skills groups. Above all, OSTAR is a top notch facility that provides excellent programming and a safe community for individuals in need.
