WHOS Hunter Valley Review

The Australia organization We Help Ourselves (WHOS) provides comprehensive residential treatment for adults struggling with alcohol and substance use disorders. Its Hunter Valley just north of Sydney offers a therapeutic community. It implements individualized care strategies tailored to address the unique needs of the resident. The facility promotes a “whole person” philosophy of care. As a result, it aims to discover and heal the underlying root causes of conditions, rather than only treating symptoms. While dual diagnosis support is available for residents suffering from co-occurring disorders, 12-step isn’t a part of the programming.

Accommodations and Food

Residents stay in a large two-story building in scenic Hunter Valley, on the coast of New South Wales. Men and women stay on separate floors in their own rooms. Because the accommodations can only house 30 residents, clients receive both a strong, tight-knit community and the privacy necessary to concentrate on recovery.

The building offers amenities such as common areas with comfortable couches, ping pong and billiards. There is also an on-site fitness center.

As a therapeutic community, WHOS Hunter Valley residents prepare many of the meals. The menu is nutritious and tasty, with options available for clients with dietary restrictions.

Treatment and Staff

WHOS Hunter Valley seeks to empower residents and heal them physically, mentally and socially. Consequently, the facility fosters a therapeutic community as the cornerstone of the program. Residents work together to overcome obstacles, build self-esteem and practice optimism for a sober future.

Before beginning treatment, the facility encourages clients to call for a confidential discussion to check eligibility. Clients then undergo an in-person intake interview that includes a medical and psychological evaluation as well as an account of substance use. Clients must be sober to enter WHOS Hunter Valley. It refers individuals requiring detox to a local program. After detox, the client immediately enters treatment. While the length of care varies, treatment typically lasts between four and six months.

Residents participate in an array of groups that focus on communication and skills building. Clients engage in regular peer feedback sessions and sexual health education classes. The facility provides psychoeducation sessions with related topics on addiction, stress management and relapse prevention techniques. WHOS Hunter Valley places a premium on wellness activities so the facility organizes regular walks, volleyball games and group exercise.

The WHOS Hunter Valley team has therapists that specialize in addiction as well as a nursing team. Clients with co-occurring disorders receive dual diagnosis support.

Extras

On Sundays, clients participate in fun activities like bowling and barbeques. Hunter Valley offers residents advanced computer courses. Finally, holistic practices include yoga and mindfulness meditation.

In Summary

Hunter Valley is a residential treatment facility that offers a four to six month residential treatment program for men and women struggling with addiction. Above all, the facility endorses the therapeutic community model as a means to strengthen residents and prepare them for success in sobriety and life. One of eight facilities in the We Help Ourselves organization, Hunter Valley is a top tier program in Australia that offers a compassionate team of experts and a powerful, unique curriculum.
