WHOS Gunyah Review

Located in the upscale Rozelle suburb of Sydney, Australia, We Help Ourselves (WHOS) is a residential treatment facility for men struggling with alcohol and substance use disorders. A group of individuals in recovery founded WHOS in 1972. It’s a therapeutic community model of care that focuses on self-empowerment and peer support. Clients with co-occurring mental health conditions receive specialized dual diagnosis support. The Gunyah facility of WHOS holds regular office hours from 9 am to 4:30 pm.

Accommodations and Food

WHOS Gunyah provides a supportive atmosphere where residents wholly participate in the community. The facility accommodates between 12 and 30 residents at a time. Clients share housing with between three and six peers. Residents bring two suitcases of clothing, reading materials and personal photos. The program does not allow smartphones or other valuable electronics.

Residents prepare many of their own meals. There are healthy options available for individuals with dietary restrictions or preferences.

Treatment and Staff

The staff at WHOS Gunyah encourages people who are considering treatment to call in advance for a free phone consultation. A team member gives the client a clearer understanding of the program and its offerings. In many cases, the individual also participates in a comprehensive assessment during intake. This evaluation includes an account of alcohol and substance use, as well as a complete medical and psychiatric history. As a result, the Gunyah team can create the most effective treatment strategy tailored to address the unique needs and goals of the individual client.

When necessary, the treatment team refers clients to a local medical detox. Upon completion, the individual returns to Gunyah. While the length of care varies, treatment typically lasts between three and four months.

Because the therapeutic community model helps individuals become aware of the consequences of their habits and behavior patterns, WHOS Gunyah expects clients to take responsibility for their own recovery. This approach also fosters a supportive environment for building interpersonal skills and confidence.  Programming integrates an array of therapeutic methods including skills groups, psycho-education, relapse prevention, holistic practices and recreation. Residents regularly participate in group work and feedback sessions. Psycho-education courses focus on a range of pertinent topics including the disease of addiction, health education and stress management. The facility teaches a number of techniques to prevent relapse including coping mechanisms, boundaries and spotting triggers.

The WHOS Gunyah team has addiction specialists and nurses with advanced degrees. A physician and nursing team are available for individuals with co-occurring disorders.

Extras

The facility places a premium on the importance of physical wellness. Consequently, residents participate in a structured exercise regimen. It includes hiking, swimming, volleyball and sessions with a physical trainer.  In addition, residents enjoy yoga, Tai chi and a mindfulness meditation practice.

Transitional housing and aftercare services are available for men that require continued support. Finally, the community also hosts a number of social events for residents and alumni.

In Summary

WHOS is a treatment organization with eight locations throughout Australia. The facility in Gunyah offers a comprehensive curriculum for men struggling with addiction and co-occurring disorders. Above all, programming is rooted in the therapeutic community model that focuses on healing the “whole client,” rather than merely treating symptoms. For anyone seeking a unique and effective community model for care, WHOS in Gunyah offers a powerful treatment experience.
