Whole Recovery FoundationWhole Recovery Foundation Review

Founded by Nicholas Russi and Tigran Sagsyan, Whole Recovery Foundation is actually a trifecta of recovery centers in Costa Rica, Panama and Southern California. The overall focus at this five-year-old company is holistic treatment, with particularly heavy emphasis on yoga and Eastern healing methods. All three locations offer 30, 60 and 90 day stays, and all are backed by a one-year guarantee that those who relapse within a year of treatment can re-do the program again for free.

Accommodations and Food

Whole Recovery Foundation’s Winnetka, California facility has been dubbed the Kool Living Recovery Center, and is a co-ed residential home with only six beds . Kool generally assigns roommates (up to three per room on twin beds), though there are private rooms available in some cases. Accommodations in general are fairly simple, though the facility does boast a nice swimming pool and Internet access; it also arranges for off-site activities such as beach and hiking trips. Meals are prepared by on-site, gourmet chefs.

Treatment and Staff

With a six-bed facility, comes a correspondingly high staff-to-client ratio. Treatment begins with on-site, medically assisted detox, and proceeds from there with individual treatment plans. Whole Recovery emphasizes traditional 12-step programs, although that typically just means a few meetings a week. It does offer plenty of yoga, Qi Gong meditation, Tai Chi and acupuncture, along with DBT and talk therapy. It also offers dual diagnosis support for those suffering from mental illnesses like eating disorders, borderline personality disorder and schizophrenia.

Wake up is at 6:30 am and is followed by 7 am Qi Gong on the beach before breakfast at 9 am. After that comes free “beach time,” followed by group therapy until lunch. The next couple of hours is filled with more therapy, massage and free time and yoga from 4 to 5 pm. Dinner’s at 6 pm, which is followed by Qi Gong at 7 pm and acupuncture at 8:30 pm. The day rounds out with free time from 9 pm until lights out at 11.

Extras

Unique to Kool Recovery is a “Living in Balance” program produced by Hazelden, which is an inpatient program track emphasizing 12-step and CBT. There is also a Pain Management program that stresses treatments and medications to make not just detox but the entire recovery process easier to handle.

Probably the most noteworthy aspect of Whole Recovery’s various offerings is its neuroceutical program. Though it sounds like science fiction, it claims to have the ability to measure the levels of neurotransmitters in residents’ brains and use Amino Acid Therapy to specifically target imbalances and restore normal function. The method aims to reduce cravings for drugs and relax residents. While all of this is good (assuming the scientific validity of these new, largely untested processes), it can’t be overstated that a whole recovery must focus on the spiritual process of addiction rather than just the mechanistic side.

In Summary

Overall, Whole Recovery Foundation offers a variety of relaxing centers serving up some new-age treatment options and the price is one of the more affordable ones on the market for what’s offered.
