The Basics
White Sands Treatment Center in Fort Meyers, Florida is a resort-like community that includes outpatient treatment with an on-site sober living component. Founded in 2014, the organization offers a full continuum of care for men and women struggling from substance abuse and co-occurring disorders. In addition to detox and residential treatment, it has two outpatient tracks: a Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) and an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP).
Treatment and Staff
The PHP is designed for clients who are classified as stable but are still in need medical monitoring. This type of program is often a first step towards entirely independent living while still ensuring that intensive therapeutic treatment is received. For some clients, the PHP is an alternative to residential treatment, while for others it follows inpatient detox and rehab and serves as a gradual transition towards societal reintegration.
Typically, the PHP meets for up to six hours a day, three to five days a week, while clients reside at home or in sober living. This level of care typically lasts one month but since treatment is individualized, some may stay longer. After the PHP, clients step down to IOP, which involves three hours of treatment three days a week. At this phase, clients are encouraged to look for work or apply to school.
Clients in both programs receive ongoing medical and therapeutic support that includes individual and group therapy, regular examinations and medication management. In the evenings, there are structured recreational activities and on-site 12-step meetings. Random drug tests help ensure personal accountability for relapses and provide the opportunity to reassess whether a more intensive form of treatment is needed. Though the focus of treatment at White Sands is primarily on CBT-style talk therapy, it offers supplemental therapeutic activities like exercise, yoga, meditation, massage and art therapy.
The White Sands staff includes psychiatrists, Master’s-level psychologists, MDs, nurses, LADCs and support staff including chefs, holistic practitioners and rehab techs.
Extras
White Sands Outpatient also features a sober living component, where clients are encouraged to live while in treatment. Located on the same grounds as the outpatient facility and the residential treatment program, the sober living is comprised of two gender-specific residences within the lush nine-residence compound. Bedrooms are shared with one other resident, furnished and come equipped with a flat screen TV and cable. Homes also feature lounge areas, dining and recreation rooms, including a workout room with a treadmill and free weights, which play an important role in the holistic treatment program. There are also several pools and hot tubs.
Sober living clients are responsible for making their own breakfast and dinner, however, groceries are provided. For clients also attending the the PHP and daytime IOP, on-site chefs serve nutritious lunches.
