White Horse Ranch Review
Based out of Mooreland, Oklahoma, White Horse Ranch is a residential treatment facility for adolescent girls between the ages of 12 and 18. Clients recover from substance abuse in an environment that combines evidence-based methods with a strong emphasis on equine therapy. Treatment also focuses on co-occurring emotional and psychological issues in addition to substance abuse.
Accommodations and Food
The White Horse Ranch is a 16-bed, ranch-style home in the Oklahoma countryside. The 6,500 square-foot house sits on 33 acres and residents share bedrooms with one to four other girls, depending on their level of treatment. Since the program is long-term, clients usually transition between several different rooms during their stay as they progress through treatment.
Residents are also served three home-style meals each day prepared by on-site chefs.
Treatment and Staff
Before treatment begins, clients are required to take a Teen Addiction Severity (T-ASI) test, a bio-psycho-social screening and disclose full family history. Clients and families are also asked to fill out an online application before they can be accepted. Treatment has several levels, with more privileges added as residents progress through each phase. Since programs are individualized to the client, there is no fixed duration of stay or length of time at each phase.
Treatment consists of 21 hours of therapy each week including one hour of individual therapy and an hour of family counseling. Equine-assisted psychotherapy is at the root of treatment and residents are paired with horses to serve as emotional mirrors and draw out deeper issues and traumas. Much of the daily schedule is made up of experiential therapies like yoga, meditation, art therapy and journaling. Other methods including CBT and REBT are incorporated and clients with co-occurring disorders can receive support as-necessary. Twelve-step recovery is not integrated into treatment, however, it does have a code of ethics it impresses upon clients called Cowgirl’s Guide to Ranch Living.
Staff consists of 20 employees including psychiatric nurses, life coaches, psychiatrists, Licensed Mental Health Counselors (LMHCs), LPCs, LADCs and equine therapists. The facility also has teachers on staff to make sure the girls keep up with their scholastic course work.
Extras
Each client is given a personal computer for use in completing schoolwork.
For those with financial difficulties, White Horse Ranch offers sliding-scale fees, loans and other options to assist in covering the costs.
