The Basics
Located in New Britain, Connecticut, the Wheeler Clinic is a community-focused healthcare organization that has been around since 1960. In addition to other services, the Wheeler Clinic offers outpatient substance abuse treatment. The Lifeline Program provides outpatient and Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) designed for women ages 16 and up who are suffering from chemical dependency and co-occurring mental health issues. This program offers childcare and case management services as well.
Treatment and Staff
Treatment in the Lifeline program begins with an initial assessment and psychiatric evaluation, after which an individualized treatment plan is developed. Treatment is offered from two to nine hours a week, on a basic outpatient or IOP level. Plans consist of individual and group therapy rooted in the evidence-based practices of CBT and Motivational Enhancement Therapy (MET). Groups are geared to help women make positive choices and address gender-responsive, trauma-informed topics including education about addiction, parenting skills and child development.
Clients suffering from co-occurring disorders receive additional support as well as medication management if needed. Although 12-step participation is not required, clients are encouraged to attend off-site meetings if they wish. Clients also submit to random drug screenings throughout treatment. The expansive staff includes LCSWs, MFTs, RNs, psychiatrists and Master’s-level clinicians.
Extras
Additional services include babysitting for preschool-aged children, case management and transportation to and from the facility. Clients can add in couples and family therapy into their program as needed.
Once clients complete the outpatient program, staff members help with aftercare planning in the form of stepped down therapy.
