WeylandConsultationServicesThe Basics

Founded in 1997 by Fredrick D. Wade in Walnut Creek, CA, Weyland Consultation Services offers brief outpatient and Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) for both adolescents and adults. Based  in Walnut Creek, California, Mr. Wade teaches about chemical dependency and dual diagnosis treatment issues extensively throughout Southern California, including at the California State University. Wade’s central philosophy is is to engage patients on a deep level so they can achieve recovery. Weyland Consultation Services does not offer traditional detox or medication management though they do have acupuncture detox therapy.

Treatment and Staff

Intensive outpatient treatment at Weyland Consulting Services is highly structured. After a comprehensive assessment, a treatment plan is created for each client. Individual and group counseling sessions are part of the program, along with detox acupuncture meant to reduce cravings for those who are having withdrawal symptoms.

Treatment modalities include CBT and groups focus on relapse prevention, self-esteem development, learning how to navigate and enjoy the world without drugs or alcohol, emotional expression and spiritual growth (though Weyland does not adhere to any one faith). Though groups address these specific topics, the format is casual and thus might go in an entirely different direction according to the needs of the clients. Similarly, some clients will receive many one-on-one counseling sessions per week while others might just participate in groups, according to their specific needs, goals and preferences.

The IOP program consists of 10 weeks of treatment. Clients have one individual therapy session and attend groups two nights a week on Mondays and Wednesdays (an additional session can be scheduled if the client needs it).

The brief treatment program (BTP) is designed for those who have just started experiencing negative consequences from their drinking and using. This program is ideal for someone who struggles with out-of-control binge drinking or has gotten a DUI. People who enter this program are not chemically dependent on substances. If a client qualifies for this program, they receive six weeks of individual and/or group counseling depending on their needs.

The IOP for adolescents  is a 10-week program that includes up to five sessions per week. Group sessions are held Mondays, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday and clients have one session of individual therapy per week, typically on Friday or Saturday so there is something scheduled during the weekend to help keep them on track.

Treatment for teens is slightly different than the program for adults. Since drug and alcohol use during the teen years can be an experimental phase, the treatment team does not like to label adolescents who come into the program as addicts or alcoholics. An assessment is taken to make sure an adolescent truly requires treatment, and after which staff members will devise individual treatment plans.

A large emphasis is placed on helping teens navigate their social lives, making changes if necessary when it helps recovery. Treatment for teens is centered on helping them understand why they made the choices they’ve made, encouraging them to evaluate aspects of their lives that may have contributed to drug and alcohol abuse. CBT and acupuncture therapy are both used. Facilitating communication between teens and their parents is another major component to the treatment program.

Staff members include psychologists and drug and alcohol counselors, and there are three staff members on site. Group size is limited to eight participants, and often they are smaller. Each client has his or her own primary counselor or therapist who monitors treatment progress.

Extras

Family therapy is offered for both adults and adolescents in treatment at Weyland.

In Summary

Weyland Consultation Services is a good pick for adults or teens who are either not sure they have issues with substance abuse or those who need intense outpatient treatment, especially people interested in homeopathic detox therapies like acupuncture. With small groups and a major emphasis placed on self-awareness, those who are seeking treatment outside the 12-step model may well find this a good fit.
