The Basics

Dr. Eda Gorbis established the Westwood Institute for Anxiety Disorders in the upscale LA neighborhood of Westwood in 1996 after completing an exclusive exposure and response prevention therapy training created by Dr. Edna Foa. Services at this facility include medication management, dual diagnosis support, group and individual therapy and relapse prevention. There are different levels of intensive programming available for OCD, body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) and other mental health concerns using evidence based best practice approaches.

Treatment and Staff

There are two levels of the Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) for OCD and one for BDD, all of which use a four step system. The three week OCD program is an all day treatment that includes extended exposure therapy that teaches clients to understand their symptoms and start to confront their fears head on. There is also an eight week intensive that meets twice weekly that uses the same techniques on a less intensive scale. In both cases there is a treatment team at hand that includes a psychiatrist to provide guidance and assistance, especially through the most uncomfortable experiences. BDD treatment is known as a co-morbidity disorder and often accompanies depression or substance abuse. For this track Dr. Gorbis uses a protocol known as Crooked Mirror Externalization therapy, which combines externalization and exposure therapies along with CBT approaches.

CBT is used in conjunction with writing exercises to increase mindfulness of the maladaptive associations. Every treatment program is individualized and client focused, and treatment can be customized depending on the client’s progress. There are several different educational elements to these programs that are either issued in real life situations or through worksheets which help clients identify triggers. The intention is for clients who are experiencing obsessive thought patterns to be able to talk themselves down from an episode and eventually prevent relapses.

The clinical staff of the institute is comprised of Doctorate and Master’s-level therapists who are LMFT and psychiatrists.

Extras

In addition to the traditional clinicians, the staff also includes a spiritual advisor, personal trainer and speech coach who lend their expertise to their clients as an added aspect of support.

In Summary

OCD is an insidious mental illness and for the millions of people who are affected by it, there may be times when it seems like no end is in sight. The programs offered at Westwood Institute for Anxiety Disorders help their clients with alternative approaches that in time help them self treat and eventually find relief.
