The Basics
Located in the city of Brandon in Manitoba, Canada, Westwind Counseling is a multi-faceted behavioral health organization that provides flexible and individualized treatment plans to women and girls struggling with eating disorders and related behavioral health issues. It was founded in 1998 and has since expanded its services. In addition to a residential treatment program, Westwind Counseling also offers outpatient and online counseling services.
Treatment and Staff
Before beginning a program, all clients go through a free initial informational session, either in person or on Skype, to help staff members determine their needs and see if the program would be a good fit for them. As a non-medical program, Westwind Counseling does not offer inpatient detox or stabilization services, though referrals can be made as necessary.
Because outpatient counseling is highly customizable, there is no typical program or length of treatment. Still, these programs typically include individual and group therapy with evidence-based treatment practices including CBT, DBT and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). These programs also include nutritional counseling and education which teach clients about goal setting, meal planning and basic nutritional skills.
While each program varies, group sessions also cover topics such as mindfulness, meditation, self-esteem, healthy body image, spiritual counseling and more. While 12-step participation is not required, clients can attend these groups as they see fit.
The staff at Westwind Counseling consists of dietitians, certified counselors, yoga instructors, psychologists and additional Master’s-level counselors.
Extras
In addition to the program outlined above, the organization also offers online versions of its treatment plans available as individual therapy or individual nutritional counseling sessions. In addition to standalone counseling services, standalone nutritional counseling is also an option, as is family therapy. Online educational modules about eating disorders are also available. As mentioned, the organization also offers a more intensive residential treatment program for women ages 16 and up. Finally, those who complete a primary care plan can also work with staff members to develop aftercare plans.
In Summary
Overall, Westwind Counseling is an organization with many different services for women struggling with eating disorders. Programs are individualized though each includes evidence-based treatment practices, nutritional counseling and education, dual diagnosis support and other educational groups. In addition to its varied in-person counseling options, the facility also offers online-based treatment for added convenience. While the cost of these programs may vary, Westwind Counseling’s outpatient programs are a strong option for women in the area.
