Accommodations and Amenities
With three homes situated a short drive west of Minneapolis, Westside Sober Living offers housing in the pleasant, safe and comfortable suburb of Minnetonka. Positioned in a vibrant area, each home is near multiple 12-step meetings, grocery stores, malls, restaurants and employment opportunities.
While one of the goals of Westside is to provide affordable transitional living, the homes nevertheless offer plenty of amenities. The Gettysburg House, located in the beautiful, quiet neighborhood of Saint Louis Park between Minnetonka and Minneapolis, is an upscale single family home that boasts private bedrooms with full sized beds and basic furnishings, a kitchen with modern appliances and two refrigerators, multiple bathrooms and a living room with a TV. The house is near the intersection of Highway 169 and Minnetonka Boulevard. In addition to restaurants and shopping, Gettysburg is near medical care and county services.
The Hampshire House, also in Saint Louis Park, is a larger home that offers many of the same amenities as well as multiple common rooms used for house and sponsor meetings as well as for socializing. Hampshire House is near Louisiana Avenue and Highway 394, with easy access to public transport.
Shady Oak House in Minnetonka is the largest of the three homes, and includes a large enclosed patio in the back, a piano in the common area in addition to a spacious kitchen. Situated next to a nature sanctuary, Shady Oak House provides a serene environment for clients to enjoy the outdoors.
Rules and Regulations
Westside promotes the 12-step recovery model and requires residents to attend 12-step meetings in addition to working with a sponsor. As personal accountability and discipline are part of the foundation at Westside, there is a zero tolerance policy for substance use and alcohol. The facility offers a clear structure that includes a standard curfew and consistent contact with the residence managers. All prescription medication must be dispensed by the house manager, and clients are required to undergo regular and random alcohol and substance screenings as well as room inspections.
In addition, Westside seeks to provide a comfortable and peaceful environment for residents. To this end, neither loud music nor television is permitted, and no opposite sex visitors are allowed. Smoking is permitted in designated areas, though residents are expected to keep up with weekly house chores. In addition, all clients must either be seeking employment, volunteering or working throughout their stay. Also, weekly house meetings, 12-step groups and sponsors are required. Three days a week, clients must attend a 12-step support meeting outside of the house. Residents are allowed laptops, though they cannot bring their own TV or a desktop computer.
