Westside NeuroTherapeutics

The Basics

Westside NeuroTherapeutics is a Deep Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (dTMS) outpatient facility. This type of therapy is used to treat clients with certain mental illnesses, like depression and OCD, as well as nicotine addiction. It is located in the upscale Los Angeles, California neighborhood of Westwood, near the campus of UCLA.

Treatment and Staff

Treatment uses the FDA-approved Brainsway Deep TMS system, which is patented by the National Institute of Health and backed by double-blind studies. Deep TMS has shown much higher success rates than traditional TMS.

Treatment for Major Depressive Disorder focuses on dysfunction of the brain’s limbic system, targeting abnormalities in its electrical signaling. The dTMS protocol offers an alternative treatment to antidepressants and Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT), both of which can have severe side effects. Treatment involves clients wearing a fitted, cushioned helmet that sends targeted electrical pulses at deep brain tissues from multiple directions. This process rebalances abnormalities in electrical functioning within the brain, even for those with drug-resistant depression. Those who are already participating in Medication-Assisted Therapy (MAT) or psychotherapy may usually continue their normal regimens while receiving dTMS.

In addition to Major Depressive Disorder, Westside NeuroTherapeutics also offers treatment for OCD, mild cognitive impairment and nicotine addiction using dTMS. Sessions last an average of 20 minutes and are conducted daily over the course of four to five weeks.

The staff’s board-certified psychiatrist, who also has a full-time private practice and is an attending psychiatrist at the UCLA Anxiety Disorder Clinic, evaluates and monitors client progress during dTMS treatment. An additional psychiatrist does the initial assessment for prospective clients. Doctorate-level clinical psychologists, one of whom focuses on OCD and anxiety disorders, are also available to track client progress. Rounding out the staff is the dTMS operator, who has a medical degree.

Extras

Westside NeuroTherapeutics offers a package of 20 dTMS sessions for $8,000 and consultations are $600 to $800. Follow up appointments with the doctor typically cost in the range of $300 to $400.

In Summary

Using a procedure that boasts higher success rates than simple Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation, Westside NeuroTherapeutics offers a highly trained staff to care for clients who are suffering from nicotine addiction or certain mental disorders. It provides an alternative treatment for those who have not had success with antidepressant medications and other therapeutic approaches. For those looking for a cutting-edge alternative to traditional depression treatment, this is worth considering.
