The Basics

Westside DBT’s mission is to “provide collaborative, compassionate and effective treatment for adults, and to raise awareness of DBT as an effective treatment modality for a wide range of mental health issues.” It has been in operation for nearly a decade and is located in the Sawtelle neighborhood of west Los Angeles.

Westside DBT provides individual therapy as well as multiple groups each week that employ Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, the therapeutic modality developed by Marsha Linehan, PhD, that incorporates cognitive therapy with concepts of acceptance and mindfulness.

Treatment and Staff

The treatment team at Westside DBT includes MFTs, LCSWs, psychologists and consulting psychiatrists who work with clients with co-occurring disorders. Many of the clinicians have experience treating clients in recovery and can incorporate 12-step and SMART Recovery principles into treatment.

After an assessment, clients are placed into individual therapy and/or DBT group therapy. Groups usually have eight clients and two clinicians. Groups are ongoing and are offered in evenings and during the day. DBT, which incorporates principles from CBT, is especially effective at helping clients learn to regulate their emotions and decrease self-harm. It has been shown to help clients decrease compulsive behavior and learn healthy ways to respond to change.

Clients enrolled in DBT groups are encouraged to attend individual therapy, as well. They are welcome to see clinicians outside of Westside DBT for individual treatment.

Extras

Westside DBT also offers family and couples counseling and tele-coaching. Westside DBT also offers DBT consult teams for clinicians.

In Summary

Westside DBT is committed to advancing the work of Marsha Linehan and her colleagues. The modality has proven to help clients struggling with a variety of mental health diagnoses and compulsive disorders, including substance abuse and borderline personality disorder. Westside DBT offers multiple groups each week and supports clients working the 12 steps and those who are in treatment with clinicians outside its network.

  1. Westside changed my life. I love the therapists there and I had a great experience. I highly recommend it. LOVE!

  2. The DBT teachings are useful, and for the adolescents, the parent groups are great (mostly because of the other parents). But the individual therapists are hit or miss and you get a bad one, like we did for our daughter (an intern charging $250/hr), they won’t let you switch. And don’t believe them when they say that clients “are welcome to see clinicians outside of Westside DBT for individual treatment.” This is absolutely not allowed. It’s all about the $$$. Sad but true.
