Western Tidewater Community Services Board is one of 40 community service agencies in Virginia that provide support services for people with intellectual disabilities, mental health issues and substance abuse disorders. To this end, Western Tidewater can accommodate folks with co-occurring mental health issues like depression, anxiety, and bi-polar disorder, offering outpatient detox services for substance abusers in Franklin, Suffolk, the Isle of Wight and Southampton.

Treatment

Outpatient medical detox allows clients to continue in their regular lives while weaning off drugs and alcohol; in some cases, medication is prescribed to assist clients in getting through withdrawal. Clients can call Western Tidewater’s outpatient program to set up an appointment, where they will have an initial evaluation and a diagnosis will be made about their condition. After intake, steps towards detox begin. The same recovery services are available to adults and adolescents; educational groups about addiction and withdrawal are provided for clients, significant others and close family. After detox is complete, clients continue with treatment.

Western Tidewater’s outpatient program doesn’t lead 12-step groups, but it does introduce clients to local AA and NA meetings. Each client makes a plan of recovery with a counselor at the outset, deciding how many hours a week he or she will do behavior management and psychotherapy groups, as well as one-on-one counseling. Typically clients participate in a concentrated way for several weeks. Payment arrangements are dependent on the client’s current income and how much he or she is willing to participate.

Extras

Western Tidewater Community Services Board does its best to set clients up for start fresh. If residents are out of work, they’re provided with employment resources and assistance in the process of getting a job. If they don’t have access to a car or transportation, transportation is provided to and from the program as needed.

In Summary

Western Tidewater Community Services Board is a great option for people in the community who want to get sober but don’t need the 24-hour supervision of an inpatient rehab or who can’t afford to take the time away from work and family for that type of treatment. One thing’s for sure: treatment here will be less expensive, but building a firm support network beyond the Western Tidewater clinical team is the responsibility of the client. Getting sober here means being willing to take action. Incoming clients should take advantage of the educational resources Western Tidewater CSB provides for family members so they have the understanding or their loved ones.
