The Basics
Located in the seaside town of Weston-super-Mare in Somerset, England, on the Bristol Channel, Western Counselling is a treatment center that was founded in 1983. For three decades, Western Counselling has offered 12-step based residential and outpatient care for men and women struggling with substance abuse. Western Counselling is a community-based program that offers free or subsidized treatment to those who are dealing with legal issues or financial hardship.
Treatment and Staff
Outpatient services take place in the Western Counselling offices. The program begins with an assessment to help determine an individualized treatment plan for each client. The outpatient program is open to those who are in Phase Three of the residential program and all others. Flexible programming is provided to allow clients to work around their employment or school commitments. Western Counselling Outpatient is equipped to provide dual diagnosis support through individual therapy and specialized groups addressing anxiety, depression and PTSD. The programs include group, individual and family sessions.
The outpatient treatment stage usually lasts four to six weeks, depending on the client’s treatment goals. Western Counselling Outpatient programs also emphasize the 12 steps. Clients must attend three or more outside AA/NA meetings per week. Therapy methods include CBT, EMDR and DBT, along with nutrition and physical fitness.
The staff includes certified counselors, therapists and medical staff with years of experience, some of whom are also in recovery.
Extras
Western Counselling partners with a local social action charity, Lighthouse, that facilitates a range of voluntary work and training programs including the Lighthouse Café. Here, clients have the chance to learn employment skills in catering, food delivery, retail and customer service.
A transitional care program is offered through the local organization Genesis Recovery Housing. There are two gender-specific sober living houses close to the main office. During their stay, residents must attend the structured outpatient program and work or go to school. To ensure compliance, all clients must undergo random drug screenings.
