Western Arkansas Counseling and Guidance Center OutpatientThe Basics

Located in Fort Smith, Arkansas, Western Arkansas Counseling and Guidance Center is a CARF-accredited non-profit that’s been providing behavioral health services to clients throughout the state since 1972. It is also a member of the Mental Health Council of Arkansas (MHCA), a state-wide organization helping to provide access to affordable mental health care. In addition to residential treatment, the facility provides a range of flexible outpatient services to adults, adolescents and children struggling with addiction and behavioral health issues. Services are available to communities in Crawford, Franklin, Logan, Polk, Sebastian and Scott counties.

Treatment and Staff

Detox is not offered but there are several different outpatient and Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) tracks available, namely the Horizon Adult program, the Horizon Adolescent program and the New Beginnings Day Treatment program for adults.

While the Horizon programs are more akin to an IOP, New Beginnings is a less intensive and more flexible option. Still, all the above include individual, group and family therapy sessions with evidence-based practices including CBT and DBT; the specific modalities used may vary by counselor and by client. Groups cover a range of topics including dual diagnosis issues, trauma-informed care, coping skills, the Matrix Model, 12-step recovery principals, life skills and relapse prevention. Flexible case management services are also provided to help clients with any outstanding legal issues or for those in need of discharge planning.

The staff at the Guidance Center consists of psychiatrists, LACs, LMHCs, RNs, LPCs case managers and additional Master’s-level counselors.

Extras

The facility also provides a Drug and Alcohol Safety Education Program (DASEP) in intensity Levels I and II for clients with DUIs and DWIs. Another program finds volunteerism opportunities for seniors over the age of 55, wraparound mental health services for children, LEAP for children and foster care services. As mentioned, residential treatment programs for adults and adolescents are available as well. Those in need of aftercare can also work with staff members on developing stepped down treatment.

In Summary

Western Arkansas Counseling and Guidance Center is a multi-faceted, community-oriented organization with a range of behavioral health services for clients of all ages. Treatment includes evidence-based care, 12-step support and flexible case management services for a number of needs. For those in the area seeking affordable programs from an organization with a long history of service, Western Arkansas Counseling and Guidance Center’s outpatient programs are worth considering.
