Miami FloridaWestCare: Village South Review

Village South has been in operation for nearly 50 years. Supported by the non-profit WestCare Foundation and the Florida Department of Children and Families, Village South provides a number of no-cost supportive programs to residents of Miami, Florida, including residential substance abuse treatment. Village South is unique in that it provides all residential treatment services in English and Spanish, and treatment is sensitive to the cultures of South Florida’s Hispanic population.

Accommodations and Food

Clients are accommodated in a large building that also houses Village South’s administrative offices. Residents sleep in dorms and take all their meals in the facility’s cafeteria. While clients are not allowed to bring computers or cell phones into treatment, the facility does have a TV room and common areas for reading, socializing and recreation.

Village South has also built a gymnasium nearby, and it transports clients there several times a week for exercise and recreation.

Treatment and Staff

Prior to admission, potential clients visit the central intake department that performs assessments on Fridays. Following an in-depth assessment, clients are placed on a waiting list that can last from one day to two weeks.

The duration of most treatment plans is one to three months. Once enrolled in treatment, residents have full days of group therapy, psychoeducation classes and individual therapy. Therapy follows the Matrix Model, Family Systems Therapy and Seeking Safety. Groups help clients with creating boundaries and anger management, and clients can also participate in vocational training activities. Gender-specific groups are also available, and Spanish-speaking clients have a dedicated group treatment track.

Village South invites facilitators to lead on-site AA/NA meetings. Once clients have been in treatment for 30 days, they may sign-out of the facility to attend community meetings in the area.

The treatment team includes CADCs, psychologists, MSWs and LMHCs who are qualified to provide dual diagnosis support. Psychiatrists are consulted for medication management for mental health disorders.

Extras

Village South invites alumni to come speak to current residents for support and inspiration. If authorized by a client’s therapist, family members can visit after the first 30 days provided they first attend a family orientation session.

Vocational training referrals are also available, and Village South helps clients access transitional housing. For aftercare, clients can step down to attending treatment groups at the Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) and standard outpatient levels of care.

In Summary

Village South has been dedicated to helping South Florida’s most vulnerable residents—including young families, parolees and recent immigrants—for nearly half a century. Its residential substance abuse program provides structured treatment that incorporates the 12-step framework and traditional therapy. All services are available in both English and Spanish and the program connects clients to additional services, such as housing and vocational training, to help them lead safe and productive lives in recovery.
