bullhead city arizonaThe Basics

Founded in 1992, Westcare Arizona offers a full continuum of treatment services to youth, adults and families. As a part of Westhope Foundation, a non-profit treatment organization that spans over 17 states and two US Territory island regions. The programs offer sober living facilities for men and women, in addition to outpatient treatment and DUI assessments. While living in the homes, residents will participate in the local 12-step community and obtain or employment or education.

Accommodations and Amenities

Located about 100 miles south of LasVegas on the Arizona/California/Nevada border in Bullhead, Westcare Arizona has three sober living homes. The eight bed Blossom House for women and children, the seven bed Diamond House for men and the six bed Discovery House for women. The homes include bedrooms shared between two people, each with twin sized beds and dressers. All bathrooms are shared between clients. The downstairs areas of the homes offer living rooms with TV, kitchens, dining rooms and outdoor areas for smoking.

Meals are prepared by residents, who often take turns cooking as a group. Residents make weekly grocery store visits, where they can pick out their favorite items. While there is no on-site gym, group recreational actives are often organized by the house managers. Bullhead City offers bus service, courts, shopping and medical services within the community.

Rules and Regulations

The Blossom House for women and children and Discovery House for men are quite similar. Upon entering the homes, a senior peer is assigned to assist new residents in their recovery process. All clients are required to commit to a 90 day stay, obtain employment, find a volunteer program or participate in school while living in the home. When it comes to 12-step involvement, residents attend meetings daily and are required to obtain a sponsor; both on-site and off-site meetings are available. Referrals to local meetings within the community can be made upon request. Residents are also required to work on life skills through activities like cooking and financial planning.

The six bed Diamond House offers 24 hour care and supervision. Services include individual assessments, case management, recreational activities, assistance with educational, medical, dental and mental health needs as well as transportation.

Smoking is permitted in designated areas outside of the homes. Personal cellphones and laptops are also allowed. There is a strict zero tolerance policy for substances. Those caught breaking this policy may be subject to eviction.

Extras

Westcare Arizona offers DUI screenings and outpatient services for substance abuse, as well as a domestic violence shelter and a home-based outreach and engagement program for parents with substance abuse issues involved in the CPS system.

In Summary

Overall, Westcare Arizona provides a basic sober living experience for men and women. All residents are required to follow the 12-step path of recovery, attending many meetings each week and working with a sponsor. Thanks to the gender-specific environment, clients can fully focus on recovery without distractions. In all, these programs are an affordable option for those in the area.
