The Basics

Located in West Miami, Florida just miles from a string of sunny beaches, West Miami CMHC has been providing outpatient substance abuse services for adults in Dade County and greater Miami for over 15 years. The facility itself resembles an office building, but inside clients suffering from addiction are treated using evidence-based practices and the 12 steps.

Treatment and Staff

West Miami CMHC provides three adult outpatient tracks, namely IOP, outpatient and drug court. The first step in any of the above is getting an assessment, which is facilitated by a licensed mental health counselor (LMCH)—this applies to court-ordered clients as well. There are no detox or residential services offered by West Miami, but referrals can be made when necessary. Those with co-occurring disorders see the staff psychiatrist for an additional assessment before a treatment schedule can be outlined. All clients are required to submit to urinalysis and must attend at least three 12-step meetings per week. Treatment consists of group and individual therapy, primarily using CBT.

The most structured treatment option is IOP, which meets for three hours, four times a week for group therapy; on top of this, individual therapy is scheduled one hour a week as well. Typical duration for IOP is 16 weeks, though it can be extended if a client tests positive for drugs and alcohol.

While most groups are co-ed, there are also gender-specific groups available that often deal with trauma. Other topics include addiction studies, group communication, peer discussion, 12-step discussion, self-esteem, relapse prevention, dealing with cravings, triggers and defense mechanisms. IOP clients are also taught stress reduction techniques such as meditation.

Those in the standard outpatient program meet twice a week for two hours, typically for 12 weeks. Individual therapy is on an as-needed basis, but clients are still assigned a primary counselor to meet at least three times during the 12-week period. Group topics are similar to those offered in IOP.

Lastly, drug court clients are required to attend outpatient for at least one year. Individual therapy happens weekly, and the number of groups per week varies depending on the client and the court order. While the group topics are similar to those in outpatient and IOP, anger management classes are mandatory for these individuals. There are also sessions on recidivism and societal impact of addiction. Clients are required to stay clean (providing urinary analysis) and to attend 12-step meetings, where they have to get court cards signed.

The treatment team consists of a medical doctor, a psychiatrist, four LMHCs, two MFTs and one CBHT (Certified Behavioral Health Technician). A Master’s-level therapist using CBT conducts all individual sessions. West Miami CMHC is open Monday through Friday from 9 am until 8 pm and on Saturdays until 2 pm, so clients have morning or evening options for treatment.

Extras

In addition to their variety of program tracks, family therapy can also be arranged by request through a client’s primary counselor. DUI classes are held on Saturdays and all completion forms are returned to Miami Drug Court. Clients are required to pay fees upfront; no insurance is accepted and sliding scale fees are not available.

In Summary

Overall, West Miami CMHC offers affordable and structured outpatient treatment, with a variety of treatment plans to fit each clients’ needs. All who attend get care that fits their schedule, and each has the option of adding family programming or gender specific groups when necessary. While its offerings are limited to a certain niche, it still offers solid treatment and a service to the community with the drug court program.
