West Hills Hospital Review

West Hills Hospital is the only acute care psychiatric hospital in Reno, Nevada. It also serves the border-area residents of northern California. For over 30 years, it has provided mental health and substance abuse treatment to children, adolescents and adults. Its mission is to “provide ethical, compassionate and therapeutic mental health and chemical dependency services to enhance health, self-esteem and quality of life.”

West Hills has mental health inpatient and outpatient treatment for clients of all ages. Its substance abuse treatment programs are targeted to adults. It provides a short-term inpatient program for detox (three to seven days) and an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) that consists of 20 treatment sessions. West Hills has 95 beds and is located near the University of Nevada, Reno.

Accommodations and Food

West Hills aims to provide a comfortable and cheerful treatment atomosphere. Residents usually have roommates and can watch TV and play games in the unit’s day room. Clients can use the hospital’s unit phones to make and receive calls from family. Residents each in the hospital’s cafeteria; those who aren’t stable enough to walk can take their meals in their room.

Treatment and Staff

Inpatient clients have an assessment at the hospital. Upon admission, they begin their intensive medication protocol under the care of the hospital’s nurse and physicians. Residents are required to attend processing groups each day that may teach CBT and other emotion regulation skills. Once they’re feeling well enough, clients are also encouraged to attend recreational therapy in the hospital’s gym. Twelve-step meetings are not offered on-site, but clients may be encouraged to attend them as part of their discharge plan.

As an acute care facility, West Hills has several staff psychiatrists, LCSWs and nurse practitioners, all of whom are skilled at treating co-occurring disorders.

Most residents complete their treatment in five days or less. Before leaving, the treatment team creates an extensive discharge plan that may include peer support meetings, therapy and outpatient treatment.

Extras

Residents can receive visitors three days a week. Many of West Hills’ inpatient clients choose to continue treatment in West Hills’ IOP. West Hills has a comprehensive video assessment program that can be used to treat clients in rural areas of Nevada for whom travel to Reno is a barrier to treatment.
