The Basics

West Hills Hospital is the only acute care psychiatric hospital in Reno, Nevada. It also serves the border-area residents of northern California. For over 30 years, it has provided mental health and substance abuse treatment to children, adolescents and adults. Its mission is to “provide ethical, compassionate and therapeutic mental health and chemical dependency services to enhance health, self-esteem and quality of life.”

West Hills has mental health inpatient and outpatient treatment for clients of all ages. Its substance abuse treatment programs are targeted to adults. It provides a short-term inpatient program for detox (three to seven days) and an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) that consists of 20 treatment sessions. West Hills has 95 beds and is located near the University of Nevada, Reno.

Accommodations and Food

West Hills aims to provide a comfortable and cheerful treatment atomosphere. Residents usually have roommates and can watch TV and play games in the unit’s day room. Clients can use the hospital’s unit phones to make and receive calls from family. Residents each in the hospital’s cafeteria; those who aren’t stable enough to walk can take their meals in their room.

Treatment and Staff

Inpatient clients have an assessment at the hospital. Upon admission, they begin their intensive medication protocol under the care of the hospital’s nurse and physicians. Residents are required to attend processing groups each day that may teach CBT and other emotion regulation skills. Once they’re feeling well enough, clients are also encouraged to attend recreational therapy in the hospital’s gym. Twelve-step meetings are not offered on-site, but clients may be encouraged to attend them as part of their discharge plan.

As an acute care facility, West Hills has several staff psychiatrists, LCSWs and nurse practitioners, all of whom are skilled at treating co-occurring disorders.

Most residents complete their treatment in five days or less. Before leaving, the treatment team creates an extensive discharge plan that may include peer support meetings, therapy and outpatient treatment.

Extras

Residents can receive visitors three days a week. Many of West Hills’ inpatient clients choose to continue treatment in West Hills’ IOP. West Hills has a comprehensive video assessment program that can be used to treat clients in rural areas of Nevada for whom travel to Reno is a barrier to treatment.

In Summary

West Hills Hospital has been serving the residents of northern Nevada and California for 30 years. Its inpatient detox program encourages clients to participate in processing groups and recreational therapy as soon as they are able. West Hills’ multi-disciplinary treatment team is experienced in treating severe co-occurring disorders and takes pride in creating effective aftercare plans for inpatient residents.

I’ve had nothing but very compassionate care when I’ve gone on occasion for dual diagnosis being depression and alcohol detox. They use medication for alcohol withdrawal, valium or ativan being the main two, and that is such a crucial step, it’s impossible to focus on getting help for whatever your immediate crisis is when you are incredibly sick and can barely move, nevermind cope with quitting alcohol. When left to withdraw that way by some places, I immediately got alright back out of the place, gave up getting help, and ran back to alcohol so as to just to not feel like I’m dying. Staff is very friendly, very interactive and involved, food is absolutely excellent, beds completely suck however. They are barely a step above jail beds (uh…er…or so i’ve heard 🤣🤣 with only a 6 inch, very hard mat as a mattress accompanied by thin plastic pillows of which you need a minimum of 4 for passable comfort. Budget cuts over the years have unfortunately eradicated most non-treatment related activities that are for just leisurely down time such as crafts, interesting books, and sports equipment thats not a flat basketball, lol, so my reccomendation is bring a good set of crayons, colored pencils, or markers with an adult coloring book of some sort and a good bookto occupy your free time. Thankfully, also they do have expanded Direct tv in main area so theres limitless channels to occupy you too, when not in groups. I would give it a solid 4 out of 5 stars. Because of the lack of fun leisure activities they used to have is why I didn’t give it 5 stars. ‘ll)
