The Basics

West Hills Hospital is located near the University of Nevada, Reno in Reno, Nevada. It is the only acute carepsychiatric hospital in northern Nevada and also serves the border-area residents of northern California. For over 30 years, West Hills has provided mental health and substance abuse treatment to children, adolescents and adults. Its mission is to “provide ethical, compassionate and therapeutic mental health and chemical dependency services to enhance health, self-esteem and quality of life.”

West Hills has mental health inpatient and outpatient treatment for clients of all ages. Its substance abuse treatment programs are targeted to adults. It provides a short-term inpatient program for detox (three to seven days) and an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) that consists of 20 treatment sessions.

Treatment and Staff

IOP clients attend group therapy three times a week for three hours each session. The IOP consists of 20 sessions and most clients complete their treatment plan in six to eight weeks. Individual therapy is not a component of the IOP, but clients may be able to coordinate individual sessions with their treatment team for an additional fee.

Groups use CBT and psychodynamic processing, among other evidence-based modalities, and usually have 14 or fewer participants. As an acute care facility, West Hills has several staff psychiatrists, LCSWs and nurse practitioners, all of whom are skilled at treating co-occurring disorders. The outpatient clinical manager also has expertise in treating victims of military assault.

Twelve-step meetings are not a requirement of treatment in the IOP, but clients may be encouraged to attend them in addition to group therapy and to incorporate them into their aftercare plan.

Extras

The treatment team works with each client to create an effective aftercare plan that may include therapy, peer support meetings and goal-setting. West Hills also has a comprehensive video assessment program that can be used to treat clients in rural areas of Nevada for whom travel to Reno is a barrier to treatment.

In Summary

West Hills Hospital has been serving the residents of northern Nevada and California for 30 years. Its IOP helps clients learn life skills and emotional regulation skills in therapy groups that allow for individual attention. West Hills’ multi-disciplinary treatment team is experienced in treating severe co-occurring disorders and takes pride in helping clients create effective aftercare plans.

Review was mistakingly posted on outpatient article, it’s meant in regards to the inpatient program and will repost it again in that section as well.

I’ve had nothing but very compassionate care when I’ve gone on occasion for dual diagnosis. They use medication for alcohol withdrawal and that is such a crucial step, it’s impossible to focus on getting help for whatever your crisis is when you are beyond sick and feel worse than death. When left to withdraw like that by some places, I immediately ran out of the place, gave up getting help, and ran back to alcohol just to not feel like dying. Staff is very friendly, food is excellent, beds completely suck tho. They are barely a step above jail beds with a 6 inch, hard mat for a mattress and thin plastic pillows of which you need at least 4. Budget cuts unfortunately eradicated almost all activities like crafts, books, and sports equipment, so my reccomendation is bring a good set of crayons, colored pencils, or markers with an adult coloring book of some sort and a good book. Also they do have Direct tv in main area so theres limitless channels to occupy you as well, when not in groups. I would give it a solid 4 out of 5 stars.
