Located on the beachfront in Oceanside, California, West Coast’s highly individualized wellness plans are designed to facilitate long-term recovery. Clients are free to choose from an array of modalities to build a program that suits their needs. Residential treatment is available for men only, while outpatient care in nearby Carlsbad is offered to both men and women.
Accommodations and Food
Set in a sleek, modern home on the water’s edge, West Coast’s facility can host up to six men. Rooms are spacious and each houses two to four residents at a time, with shared bathrooms; private accommodations can be arranged upon request for a considerable sum. Clients can find space for private reflection on one of the building’s many balconies, or in sitting rooms that overlook the ocean.
West Coast believes strongly in the nutritional component of recovery, and includes healthy-eating principles as a vital part of their treatment. In an effort to encourage better life-skills such as cooking, nutrition awareness and financial responsibility, residents are given a $50 food allowance twice a week. They are accompanied by staff to local markets and urged to form healthy eating habits through both the purchases they make and the meals they prepare for themselves. Once a week, a private chef accompanies clients to the local farmer’s market to educate them on organic food and meal preparation—he also hosts cooking classes for residents.
Treatment and Staff
This facility uses an individualized approach where clients are highly involved in the creation of their wellness plans. They are encouraged to do spiritual work as part of their recovery, though while 12-step programs are available, they are not required. West Coast is partnered with numerous spiritual and religious groups, and they leave it up to each resident to select whichever one resonates with them (if any).
While clients typically stay in treatment for three to four months, long-term outpatient and aftercare programs are available afterwards. West Coast offers referrals for sober livings to both men and women, as well as co-ed outpatient programs through their office in Carlsbad.
West Coast’s outpatient facility offers a Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) program which meets Monday through Friday, 9 am to 3:30 pm; Intensive Outpatient Programming (IOP) is also available with small men’s, women’s and mixed gender groups of no more than six to eight people. Both programs involve individual and group therapy, and maintain the same flexible philosophy as the residential track. Clients work with their counselors to determine the number and type of sessions they attend each week.
A multi-disciplinary clinical team offers treatment at both locations including neurofeedback, EMDR, DBT, CBT, hypnotherapy, somatic experiencing, psycho-education, psychodrama, process groups, transition planning, family therapy and sessions on codependency. Trained clinicians are available during business hours, with additional care and supervision provided by certified chemical dependency counselors. West Coast also provides dual diagnosis support, with a doctor available as needed. Detox is non-medical despite the medical staff, and is limited to the men’s residential program.
Extras
Physical activity is an important piece of West Coast’s holistic approach. Clients can participate in yoga, surfing, rock climbing and a ROPES course, or they can work with a personal trainer once a day (and more frequently on weekends). Staff also teach residents sleep and relaxation techniques to naturally alleviate anxiety and depression.
West Coast also offers equine therapy and courses in life skills, as well as mindfulness and educational and occupational consulting; clients can also attend sweat lodges, sound baths and acupuncture sessions. Days can end with guided meditation, a 12-step meeting or any combination of the above.
