West Brook Recovery Center blends intensive therapy in a residential setting with real world living to help clients embrace recovery. Located in Grand Rapids, Michigan, the program offers a lot more freedom than most, allowing clients to go out for a cup of coffee, a meal in town or a movie; they even have access to their cars. West Brook Recovery Center believes in exposure to the outside world.
Accommodations and Food
The 20-bed program houses clients in two apartment complexes, keeping men and women separated. Each two-bedroom apartment holds four clients at a time. The units are comfortable, featuring full kitchens, nicely decorated living rooms with televisions, a dining room and two bathrooms. For therapy, both genders meet at the main facility, where there are several offices and therapy rooms.
Clients are required to cook and clean for themselves. Each week, a $60 dollar food card can be used to purchase groceries. If they’d like to spend more than that, they are welcome to have family members send them extra funds. Back in their apartments, clients can participate in group or solo cooking. In addition, they have the freedom to go off-site for meals or coffee in town as long as the restaurant does not serve alcohol.
When it comes to fitness, clients receive a gym membership to a local facility that can be used in the mornings. Guided recreation classes like yoga happen during the week at the main facility.
The 30-90-day program operates around evidence-based modalities such as CBT and DBT. From 8:30 am to 5 pm, residents spend their day in the main facility, receiving two rounds of group therapy, an educational lecture and a class. In addition, they can have individual therapy once a week. Group topics include relapse prevention, processing, trauma, anger management and grief. Classes such as the aforementioned yoga as well as relaxation, nutrition and meditation rotate throughout the week.
While West Brook Recovery Center does not call itself a 12-step based program, it does require clients to attend a variety of recovery-based meetings on a daily basis. This includes AA/NA as well as other types of recovery groups. The idea behind this is to set clients up with a foundation for long-term sobriety, immersing them in a sober community.
Family involvement is not mandatory, although it is highly recommended. Each Wednesday, family members are invited in for group therapy and lectures. Following these sessions, clients are welcome to go off-site with their loved ones for a meal or a nice walk.
Once the residential phase has been completed, clients can step down into the Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP). This includes a full daily schedule of group therapy, lectures and classes, with clients returning home in the evening. The length of time spent in IOP depends on the client and costs $350 per day. Individual therapy is also available, costing $130 per session.
A complimentary twice a week aftercare program is available to all those who have completed treatment.
The staff includes three addictionologists, two psychiatrists, two physicians, therapists, counselors and social workers.
West Brook Recovery Center provides a great deal of therapy and engagement with the outside world. While many treatment facilities enforce strict rules and a single model for recovery, this program sees freedom and flexibility as integral to successful treatment.
