Wellfully Review
In 1980, a trio of a psychiatrist, judge and attorney saw the need for a youth-oriented substance abuse treatment program in Rapid City, South Dakota. What resulted was Wellfully, a non-profit organization that treats adolescents ages 12 to 17 suffering from behavioral problems and drug and alcohol abuse. With both inpatient and Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) held during after school hours, the facility gives youth a chance to restart their lives in a supportive and nurturing environment. The program has a strong a 12-step emphasis coupled with corrective therapy. Detox and dual diagnosis treatment are not offered at the facility.
Accommodations and Food
The residential home is co-ed and houses 14 clients, with genders separated between two halls. Clients sleep in double-occupancy rooms in single beds, and each may bring their own bedding and other belongings. The facility is meant to be homey and comfortable. There’s a living room where residents can interact with one another on sofas and relax.
Extra care is taken to make sure the food is both nutritious and tasty. A professional cook is on staff who prepares three meals a day out of the kitchen, all made with quality ingredients. A wide variety of food is served, and the cook can accommodate those with dietary restrictions or food allergies.
Treatment and Staff
Emphasis is placed on 12-step involvement as well as Corrective Thinking Curriculum, a treatment modality designed to change destructive behaviors. Group therapy focuses on identifying “barriers and tactics” that have led to drug and alcohol abuse. These can be things like playing the victim or having a superior image of oneself, and the goal of treatment is to redirect residents’ thoughts in a healthy way. In addition, all clients have an individual session at least once a week.
Residents are transported to off-site 12-step groups multiple days per week. In addition, an AA member brings a meeting to the house once a week. For those in IOP, participation in 12-step meetings is required as a part of treatment. Residential treatment typically lasts between 45 and 60 days.
The IOP consists of three hours of treatment four times a week, also including one session of individual therapy and during after school hours. Length of treatment depends on each client.
The staff is composed of LADCs Each client gets a good deal of individual attention, with a staff-to-client ratio of seven-to-one. Wellfully focuses on one-on-one interaction with clients at all times. If, for example, a client is acting up in group, a staff member will take them aside and check in to see what the root of the problem is. Whenever more individual therapy sessions are necessary, the staff are quick to schedule them.
Extras
Wellfully also offers a continued care program for those who have completed residential or IOP treatment. The group meets once a week.
