Grand Rapids MIchiganThe Basics

Located in Grand Rapids, Michigan, Wedgewood Christian Services is a Christian-based, community-focused nonprofit treatment facility that aims to help at-risk adolescents. For 55 years, Wedgewood has been helping troubled kids and their families discover meaning and purpose by promoting healing and wholeness in their lives, focusing on treatment for mental and behavioral problems and applying Christian principals.

While Wedgwood addresses a range of adult and youth problems (including sex trafficking, abuse and neglect, sexual abuse, sexual behavior issues, teen pregnancy, developmental delays, learning difficulties and school expulsions), its specialty is adolescent substance abuse. Social services and treatment programs are available at a basic outpatient level, an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) and residential treatment.

Treatment and Staff

Wedgewood offers outpatient for any age, but the IOP is only for youth who have substance abuse problems, who are associated with other youth who have these problems and/or have serious emotional and behavioral problems. The basic outpatient track meets once a week and the IOP track meets three times a week in a group setting (usually three to 10 clients), from 3-5:30 pm on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays. Treatment is individualized and evidence based.

In addition to individual and group therapy, Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a major component during early treatment. Group sessions usually involve topics such as triggers, anger management, coping skills and tips on creating new lifestyles. CBT and DBT are the main modalities of treatment at Wedgewood, particularly for teens who experience self harm and cutting, risky and impulsive behaviors, or have confusing relationships with conflict. The duration of treatment depends on the individual and varies from case to case.

The staff are all licensed mental health professionals with experience treating a variety of issues. Through group sessions, they aim to help teens learn to become more away of their emotions and impulses as well as the effects of their behavior and substance use. Parents are also allowed to attend some of the DBT groups. Detox is not available and 12 step work is encouraged but not required.

Extras

Staff are trained to address a whole host of issues including anxiety, bullying, family conflicts and change, life transitions, trauma, social skills, questions about identity and purpose, death of loved ones, ADD or ADHD and academic learning difficulties.

In Summary

Wedgwood is a Christian faith-based treatment facility aimed at empowering youth and their families with love, purpose, a sense of community and healing. Through Christian principles and evidence-based treatment with both general outpatient and an IOP, Wedgwood seeks to help some of the most vulnerable youth in the Michigan to get back on track and lead happy lives.

Because Wedgwood is non-profit, treatment is accessible to all, regardless of income. Some insurance plans are accepted, but most payment comes from state-funded legacies like the Deptartment of Human Services, Community Mental Health, Juvenile Courts and Michigan Adoption Services.
